Pacifista convinto, Pleasants passò i primi anni del conflitto nell'isola di Jersey, occupata dai tedeschi. Fu imprigionato dai nazisti e, tra una fuga e l'altra, la sua vita si trasformò in un vortice di eventi imprevedibili. Visse un breve periodo nella Parigi occupata, fu catturato e reclutato dai British Free Corps delle Waffen SS, si innamorò di una giovane donna tedesca, fu testimone del bombardamento di Dresda e tentò di sfuggire alle truppe sovietiche che invadevano Berlino rifugiandosi nei condotti della rete fognaria. Al termine della guerra, Pleasants si ritrovò dalla parte comunista della Cortina di Ferro. Riprese a esibirsi come forzuto in un circo itinerante ma fu arrestato dal KGB, accusato di spionaggio e condannato a venticinque anni di lavori forzati in uno dei tristemente noti campi di concentramento della Russia artica. Dopo la morte di Stalin, nel 1953, Eric Pleasants venne finalmente liberato da quello che era diventato il suo Purgatorio privato e speciale, dopo aver passato quasi metà della sua esistenza all'interno di un incubo atroce.
