Paginated: Vol. I 356pp; Vols. II and III 357-955pp. Includes frontis, facsimile letter and 7 maps total (6 folding maps in rear pocket). Volumes have brown cloth boards with light wear. Previous owner's pencil marginalia on front endpapers. Slipcase has heavy wear and soiling and has been repaired with black booktape. Overall good. Pike commanded two expeditions in the newly acquired Louisiana Territory. In 1805, he was sent to find the headwaters of the Mississippi River in northern Minnesota (designated as Part 1, "Mississippi Voyage"). In 1806, he journeyed to the interior portion of then-Louisiana Territory, to the sources of the Arkansaw River and the Rocky Mountains of present Colorado (Part 2, "Arkansaw Journey"). After this expedition he was captured by the Spanish and taken through Mexico to the then Spanish-American boundary between Texas and Louisiana (Part 3, "Mexican Tour").; Large 8vo 9" - 11" tall.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Limited Edition. 955pp. (continuously paginated). Octavo [26.5 cm] 1/4 white cloth, with tan paper over boards, and printed paper title labels on the spines. Uncut pages. The extremities are lightly foxed, and the boards are at times unevenly, but subtly faded. The underlying boards are exposed at the very edges. The pages of volume 1 have very brief markings here and there, and the frontispiece and the accompanying tissue guard in this volume are foxed. Six folded maps in pocket at rear of volume 3 (pocket torn). Maps are crisp and lightly toned. An edition limited to eleven hundred and fifty copies. Nos. 1 to 150 are on Handmade Paper. This set is number 66. Pike's expeditions up the Mississippi and into Colorado were contemporaneous with the Lewis and Clark expedition. His journals were confiscated by the Spanish and were not recovered until the 1900s. Pike wrote this popular and influential account of his journeys from memory.

Original white cloth spines and paper-covered boards. Edgewear, typical light toning and soiling to spine cloth, internally sound and clean, partially unopened. Unique to this set is the addition of a four-page pamphlet bound in after the title page in Volume I, titled "Report of the Committee Appointed the Twenty Second Ultimo to Inquire into if any, and what Compensation Ought to be Made to Captain Pike and His Companion, for their Services in Exploring the Mississippi River, and in their Expedition to the Sources of the Osage, Arkensaw, and La Plate Rivers, Together with their Tour Through New Spain" (Washington, 1808), a copy of which sold alone at auction in 2021 for $900. Howes (P-373) deems this the "best edition" of Pike's narrative. Jenkins (Basic Texas Books p. 441) praises Coues' "lengthy preliminary material, excellent though harsh critical commentary, [and] extensive annotations.".
