Two volumes. Contemporary three-quarter crushed red morocco and red cloth, spines gilt. Edges worn, corners rubbed, spines sunned. Hinges cracked at titlepages. Otherwise, very good. The famous diary of Philip Hone, which he kept from 1828 until his death in 1851. The diary is likely the most extensive and detailed personal record of the first half of the 19th century in America. Hone was a businessman, auctioneer, and a socialite of sophistication and fine taste, whose many friends included Washington Irving, Samuel Morse, Daniel Webster, John Jacob Astor, John Quincy Adams, and Martin Van Buren. Hone also served a single term as mayor of New York City from 1826-28. HOWES H608.
