The American Philatelist is the oldest continuously published philatelic journal in the world, the first issue having appeared in January 1887. The magazine is published monthly for members of the American Philatelic Society. It has the appearance of a standard glossy color magazine, typically running about 100 pages per issue. As the house organ, there are monthly departments covering American Philatelic Society news and activities, a president's column, and other articles specific to the Society itself. The core of the magazine consists of 5-10 articles on subjects related to philately. All of its articles feature color illustrations, graphs and charts. This issue contains the following articles: "State of the Hobby: Reminiscences of an 'Old-Timer' Postal Employee" (40 year veteran of the U. S. Post Office) by Mathew J. Bowyer; "The Battle Scenes Series of Civil War Patriotic Stationery" (Civil War patriotic Stationery, envelopes, letter sheets, song paper) by James W. Milgram, M. D.; "Vermilion Validations: Seals of East Asia" (East and Southeast Asian context, is a general name for printing stamps and impressions thereof which are used in lieu of signatures) by Gerald J. Gallagher; "At 21, Showgard Models Come of Age" (Showgard series of model philatelic motor vehicles) by Peter Martin; "Laying an Egg" (1909 egg shaped postcard) by Charles A. Fricke; "Special Recognition Supplement: Philately & Philanthropy" (Acknowledging APS members); "Collecting Coast to Coast: April Flowers: A bouquet of Bogus EFOs" (common ways fake errors are created) by Wayne Youngblood; "Exploring Back-of-the-Book: More on Newspaper Stamps" by David Straight.
