Owned by a Member of the Darrow Family Page, Curtis Hidden [1870-1946], Editor. Thompson, Stith [1885-1976], Editor. Darrow, Jessie, Former Owner. British Poets of the Nineteenth Century: Poems by Wordsworth, Coleridge, Scott, Byron, Shelley, Keats, Landor, Tennyson, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Robert Browning, Fitzgerald, Clough, Arnold, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Christina Rossetti, Morris, Swinburne, Dobson, Henley, Kipling, Housman. Chicago: Benj. H. Sanborn & Co, 1930. Volume II (Tennyson through Housman) only. xvi, [441]-1027 pp. Publisher's textured cloth, blind frames to boards, gilt title to front board and spine. Light rubbing and slight scuffing to boards and extremities, light wear to spine ends. Very light browning to interior, crack in text block between pp. 458-459, all signatures secure. Ownership signature "Jessie Darrow- 1931" to front free endpaper, small pencil marks and notes in a few places. $250. * This book was likely owned by Jessie Darrow Lyon Johnston [1910-1968], the eldest of famed American attorney Clarence Darrow's three granddaughters. Most of the annotations are to Edward Fitzgerald's translation of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, a longtime favorite of Darrow and the subject of his 1899 work A Persian Pearl. Brief and scholarly in nature, they reflect a growing interest in a work extremely meaningful to the Darrow family. The ownership signature "Jessie Darrow" may also refer to Jessie Ohl Darrow, Clarence Darrow's first wife, though it is more likely that of the granddaughter.
