Condition: Gut. 1. ed. 208 S. : überw. Ill. ; 29 cm. Sehr gutes Ex. - Englisch. - In his Little History of Photography, Walter Benjamin writes: 'No matter how artful the photographer, no matter how carefully posed his subject, the beholder feels an irresistible urge to search such a picture for the tiny spark of contingency, of the here and now, with which reality has (so to speak) seared the subject, to find the inconspicuous spot where in the immediacy of that long-forgotten moment the future nests so eloquently that we, looking back, may rediscover it. The 'inconspicuous spot' splits history open, exposing a lining of another time, an elsewhere, already seen. It's the after blow, the apres-coup, or in the original German nachträglichkeit, an inscription of the future re-reading of the past. This is the palimpsest: the overlay of nets of meaning, the unfolding of implication and significance. Meanings change; what was once immediately obvious becomes obscure, and other meanings accrue (pearl in the oyster), gradually, or else overtake the object, seizing it, in a sudden transformation. Something is preserved in these photographs, rescued from inevitable rot, but it's not whatever it was that these things once signified, imagining for the moment that a stable meaning may once have attached to these elements, these various and multiple things in the world. The residue of such transformations posits a time when these very photographs, no longer new, will themselves be regarded as old, a time when the multiple times and places of signification will be superimposed in the reading of the image. The question remains: what is the relation of that little reality (cepeu de realite) which sears the image, and what Barthes calls the third meaning? What does the inscription of time within the image have to do with the 'obtuse meaning', a meaning so recalcitrant, so awkward, so stupid, even? Maybe Benjamin's 'inconspicuous spot' of time is connected to the fetish, that insubstantial mark of a double movement, a double moment, moving towards representation (this takes the place of that) and at the same time, in the same movement, towards petrification (the memorial). Benjamin insists that 'any person, any object, any relationship can mean absolutely anything else', and these photographs are a monument to this idea. Olivier Richon produces a future out of the past, as his photographs move, like a pendulum, between representation and deathliness. The memorial stone covers up the scandal of a body, rotting, replacing putrid dissolution with smooth, unchanging stone. These photographs move in both directions at the same time: something is preserved and undone in the same moment. The excess, the supplement, the edge of the yellow velvet, the gleam on the knife, are as if ground out of the pressure of this double movement, extruded by the photograph. The edge of the velvet continues its lure, perpetually pulling the eye in to the image, producing a curiosity that doesn't end, a pleasure that remains. Leineneinband mit illustriertem OSchutzumschlag. 176 Seiten mit zahlreichen Farbfotoabbildungen. Format 24,5 x 28,5 cm. Sehr gutes Exemplar, wie unbenutzt. Edited by Ute Eskildsen.
