Volume in-8, reliure demi-chagrin vert d'époque, dos à quatre faux nerfs, titre et fleurons dorés, plats de percaline verte, double encadrement, médaillon doré avec le monogramme IHS au centre du plat supérieur "Convictus Pictaviensis Societatis Jesu", 440 p., gravure en frontispice. Traduit de l'anglais par l'abbé A. Goemaere. La première édition anglaise du texte de Newman date de 1856. Newman, le converti, met en scène, dans la Province romaine dont la métropole était Carthage, l'histoire de Callista, qui mourra en martyre sous les persécutions de Dèce. A noter que le pensionnat jésuite associé au collège Saint Vincent de Paul à Poitiers ouvert par les Jésuites à la demande de Monseigneur Pie en 1854, succédait à celui de Brugelles en Belgique,(d'où notre éditeur belge catholique Goemaere) et devint le collège Saint-Joseph en 1864. Quelques petites taches sur le plat supérieur, très bon exemplaire. Etiquette de remise de prix à Daniel Gras "in Schola Rhethorices auditor, 8 augusti 1860", collée sur le premier contreplat. Comme l'écrit le préfacier et traducteur, ces conférences "s'adressent particulièrement aux hommes qui forment, dans l'église anglicane, le parti le plus rapproché du catholicisme ; mais, malgré la spécialité apparente de leur objet, les catholiques et les protestants de l'Europe les liront avec autant de profit que les anglicans de l'Ecole d'Oxford". Une profonde réflexion spirituelle sur les effets de la prospérité matérielle et sur l'influence négative de l'Etat dans la vie de la foi, et surtout une remarquable défense de la foi catholique face aux critiques protestantes.
