Fluoride removal methods from drinking water with special reference to adsorption method. Water on the planet earth is in motion through the hydrological cycle. About 2.7% of the total water available on the earth is fresh. About 75.2% of fresh water remains frozen in polar areas of the earth whereas 22.6% occurs as ground water. The remaining part is available in the form of lakes, rivers, atmosphere, moisture, soil and vegetation. Therefore, the effectively available fresh water for consumption and other uses is a small proportion of the quantity available in rivers, lakes as well as in ground water. The problems about the development, management and quality of water resources arise due to its uneven spatial distribution, changes in climatic conditions, urbanization, industrialization etc. Accordingly, the significance of water has been recognised and therefore more importance is being given for its economic use and better management for its quantity as well as quality also. Inland water resources of the country are categorized as rivers and canals, reservoirs, tanks and ponds, lakes etc. Other than rivers and canals, total water bodies cover all area of about 7 M. Ha. Himalayan state Uttarakhand possesses diverse hydrogeological regimes with fair amount of snow cover in the form of glaciers. Usually, the state receives heavy rainfall i.e. more than 1500 mm per annum during the monsoon period and snowfall, which is caused by winter depression during January to March months. Ground water in hilly parts of the State occurs mainly in fissures and fractures, and emerges in the form of water streams such as gadhera or springs. However Ganga, Yamuna, Ramganga, Kali, Kosi rivers etc. and their tributaries and the main surface water bodies in the state. Besides this some lakes including Naini Lake, Sat Tal Lake, Naukuchiatal Lake also fulfill the water requirements in the state. Considering the importance of water USERC has decided to introduce a book on Water Resources Management and Treatment Technologies based on the chapters contributed by subject experts from state and national level organizations. The book brings out a broad understanding on the management of water resources and treatment methods for better water quality. (jacket).
