Die Rahmenhandlung ist die dabei Geschichte des 18jährigen Mario, der in Lima Jura studiert, in einem Rundfunksender Nachrichtenredakteur ist und versucht, Schriftsteller zu werden. Als er eines Tages einer angeheirateten Tante seiner Familie, der 32jährigen Bolivianerin Julia, begegnet, verliebt er sich in sie, und, nachdem sie erst eine Weile passiv bleibt, sie sich auch in ihn. Darüber hinaus geht es aber auch dem Hörspielautor Pedro Camacho, der für Marios Rundfunksender Hörspieldramen schreibt und damit überaus erfolgreich ist, womit auch schon die Brücke zu den Kurzgeschichten geschlagen istzwischen jedem Romankapitel bringt Llosa nämlich eine Hörspielgeschichte von Pedro Camacho, zwar direkten Bezug zur Haupthandlung, aber umso kurioser. Allein diese Geschichten wären schon ein Buch für sich wert besessen vom Hörspieleschreiben und dem Gedanken, die einzelnen Hörspielgeschichten durch bewußte Personenverwechslungen miteinander zu verbinden, wird Camacho schließlich verrückt und landet im Irrenhaus. Indes wächst die Liebe zwischen Julia und Mario, sie beschließen zu heiraten. Köstlichdie Reise durch die Provinz auf der Suche nach einem Bürgermeister, der Julia und Mario - der 18jährig ohne Erlaubnis der Eltern nicht heiraten darf - trotzdem traut. Nach Art der TelenovelasWie wird die Geschichte ausgehen??? Ein typisch lateinamerikanischer Roman, voller Leichtigkeit und Sorgenfreiheit, aber trotzdem auch mit melancholischen Seiten - und natürlich den kuriosen Radio-Telenovelas, die ein gelungenes Abbild der lateinamerikanischen Unterhaltungskultur sind. So fehlen etwa ausführliche Quellennachweise, dabei verbindet das Buch historische Fakten, ethnologische Beobachtungen und geographische Beschreibungen zu einer sehr unterhaltsamen Mischung, die immer noch die Anekdoten aus Geschichte und Gegenwart zusätzliche Würze erfährt. Eine ideale Reisvorbereitung oder ein Schmöker, der zum Träumen einlädt und einige Hintergrundinformationen bietet - aber mehr will das Buch vermutlich auch gar nicht sein (und in dieser Eigenschaft 5 Sterne) daher sollte man keine umfassende historisch-ethnologische Darstellung erwarten.Nachdem er seinen Zivildienst bei einer Dritte-Welt-Organisation abgeleistet hatte, kaufte sich Jörg Lohmann ein One-Way-Ticket nach Brasilien und stürzte sich in ein ungewisses Abenteuer.
