Book
Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Graham Greene is among the major creative talents of our time. This study concentrates on his achievements as a novelist whose work spanned more than sixty years, and was translated into forty languages. As skilful in writing with humour as with seriousness, he combined the gifts of a superb story-teller with the power to analyse the political ills and human dilemmas of an age of anxiety. As a writer who 'happened to be a Catholic', he also reflected the problem of faith and belief in a time of persistent violence. This study describes his vision of the twentieth century, and his evolving dedication to his craft as a writer of fiction. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo., 314pp., illustrated with b/w photos and 4 maps, orig. cloth gilt. A fine copy in a good original pictorial dustwrapper which has some tears (mostly closed). The book is intended as a study of a relationship and the way of life that grew from British India from the period of the British presence in India from 1579 when the first Englishman, a Jesuit missionary, arrived in Goa and traces the way in which the values brought affected the kind of civilization. It ends with the Imperial climax - the Viceroyalty of Lord Curzon - at the start of the long struggle which led to Independence in 1947. The cast includes the very famous, from Clive, Hastings and Burke to Kipling and Rabindranath Tagore, but also the less well known, the diarists, explorers and travellers, who recorded their impressions of a land understandably strange and dangerous.
