Leather Bound. Condition: Good+. Tenth edition. Print date 1789. xv, 379, 363 pages in 2 volumes (of 4). Each letter is shown in French, with an English translation after. Full calf leather boards have bright gilt lettering on spines and five raised bands. The leather is worn at corners, edges and spine ends but are without major stains/soiling. Vol I has fine cracks at ends of joints, front and rear but only bottom rear is actually split at bottom 1-1/2". Ffep appears to have been reglued at hinge. Endpapers are toned at all edges. The pages are clean and bright, but there are two areas where there is insect (worn holes?) to the pages, though most of the text is legible (see pics). Vol II is in excellent condition, with intact joints and hinges, bright clean pages. Both have tight bindings.

Tenth edition, four volume hardcover set bound in full brown leather with decorative gold gilt borders to covers, board edges and around pastedowns, title plates with gold stamped titling and decoration to six compartment spine, and marbled endpages. All volumes have a hint of cracking starting to exterior of hinges which remain solid, slight bumps to spine ends and cover corners with the boards starting through leather at corners, a shallow chip to the leather at head of the binding, and rubbing with a touch of cracking to leather of spine, otherwise a solid, tight VG four volume set.

Peripheral browning of most preliminary pages. Portrait frontispiece in Volume 1 is browned, old water-marking. Text block in a vlumes is generally quite clean, occasional foxing. Armorial ook-plate of Thomas Munro in each volume. Our research suggests that this is Major General Thomas Munro, civil and militarey officer in the service of the East India Company, book-plate contains his coat-of-arms with the family slogan, "Dread God". Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th earl of Chesterfield (1694-1773) was a British statesman, diplomat, and man of letters. Eugenia Stanhope was his daughter-in-law, widow of his son Philip.
