First Edition
[Short mysteries] FIRST EDITION in book form. Octavo, pp.324; [2], advertisements (including Conan Doyle's 'A Study In Scarlet' and Wilde's 'The Picture of Dorian Gray'). Publisher's pictorial red cloth, patterned endpapers. One of at least three coloured bindings (blue and green are recorded), without priority. Contents clean, no signs of ownership, text block slightly toned to extremities, two small ink spots to top edge, inside paper joint cracked to rear, binding is solid with bright covers, some rubbing/toning to backstrip. A superior copy of the scarce first Hewitt collection. 'The first important English writer of detective fiction after Conan Doyle was Arthur Morrison' (Haycraft). Morrison's faux Holmesian investigator was created for and serially published in The Strand Magazine, to fill the void left when the monthly 'Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' came to an end. Despite his often being cited as Doyle's chief imitator, Morrison seems closer to the soon-to-emerge 'Rogue' school of crime fiction and many of his Hewitt cases focus on an ingenious criminal scheme, often involving robbery, or a trick or con including the impersonation of respectable people by members of the criminal classes. Queen's Quorum [18].
