Hardback. Condition: Fine. Frank Hampson; Harold Johns (illustrator). First Edition. DAN DARE the Red Moon Mystery and Marooned on Mercury. 2nd Deluxe Collector's Edition. Mike Higgs (Editor) Hawk Books, London. 1988 First Edition ISBN 0948248807 160pp Illustrated Hardback. Bound in full colour illustrated laminated boards, a dust wrapper is not called for, this copy is in fine condition, bright, tight and square. There is a small sellotape repair to the foot of the spine and some minimal bumping to the extremities. There is a small sigtature to the top of the title page. Dan Dare was a British science fiction comic hero, created by illustrator Frank Hampson who also wrote the first stories, that is, the Venus and Red Moon stories, and a complete storyline for Operation Saturn. Dare appeared in the Eagle comic story Dan Dare, Pilot of the Future in 1950, and was dramatised seven times a week on Radio Luxembourg. The stories were set in the late 1990s, but the dialogue and manner of the characters is reminiscent of British war films of the 1950s. Dan Dare has been described as "Biggles in Space" and as the British equivalent of Buck Rogers. Dan Dare was distinguished by its long, complex storylines, snappy dialogue and meticulously illustrated comic-strip artwork by Hampson and other artists, including Harold Johns, Don Harley, Bruce Cornwell, Greta Tomlinson, Frank Bellamy and Keith Watson. These are the Dan Dare stories that appeared in the original Eagle Comic, which ran from 1950 to 1969 and featured the hero Dan Dare. The stories would often take place as parts of longer story arcs, and when this happened the stories are grouped together as such. These storylines were reprinted by Hawk Books in the late 1980s and early 1990s These large books, 35cms tall by 26cms wide, the same as the original Eagle comic, are printed in full colour and are a facsimile of the original weekly episodes. Ref A1.
