Soundwork was a contemporary music organization founded in 1975 by David Mahler that was a satellite of the alternative gallery and/or in Oddfellows Hall on Seattle's Capitol Hill, both supported by the National Endowment for the Arts. "Soundwork is a composer-oriented organization in Seattle. Soundwork is this publication - a reflection of some of the varied compositional activity in the Seattle area." This publication appears to be its first. The pieces range from traditional piano scores (Martin's "Un Jour,") to elaborate diagrams (Winkler's "Microtonal Design for a Sonic Pyramid,") performance instructions (Dewar & Knapp's "Drone Piece,") a performance review (Mahler's report on Phill Niblock at and/or,) building unique musical instruments (Hamilton-Nunnally,) and an appreciation of gospel-preacher radio (Woog.) The graphic presentation of each piece appears to have been produced by the artist, some with hand lettering and drawings, then professionally offset-printed for this collection. Several of these artists performed at Soundwork Hall.
