Hardcover. Condition: VG. No Jacket. Photos, Maps Historic Photos, Portraits (illustrator). 1st. In his preface the author describes the area covered by his book as " from Round Hill to Beaumont, from Waipori to Tuapeka" while a title page note describes it as "A social history of the borough of Lawrence and its surrounding districts." Which ever is applied the result is an excellent local history, one of a number published to mark the Otago's centennial. Settlement in the area began with the establishment of several sheep runs in the early 1850s and others quickly followed. However, with the discovery of gold in the region, the pace of development rapidity shifted to the collection of this precious metal, which saw the population increase with startling rapiditry. Thus, right from the outset of European settlement the basis for interesting local history was established. Inevitably, those initial factors for progress in the Tuapeka area were important elements in Mayhew's history. However, he was to spread his coverage to 12 chapters which included subject matter such as: Town and Settlement, Communications, Farming, The County, Education and Recreation to provide a comprehensive account of the area's development, including acknowledgeing many of the early settlers who contributed to that achievement. A valuable addition to the Otago's early history. First edition of 1949, 242 pages plus three page unpaginated bibliography and five page index. Blue hard covers with black front and spine titles are VG with slight surface wear to both spine hinges, light wear at spine extremities, internally VG+ with former owner ink name top corner FFEP dated 1949. Illustrated with fold-out map frontispiece (crease to top corner), B/w photographs throughout, mainly historical, plus numerous portraits of prominant personalities, few in-text maps.
