I suoi scritti hanno giocato un ruolo chiave nello sviluppo della dottrina del Concilio Vaticano II. Durante la Seconda guerra mondiale fu costretto a vivere nascosto per la sua partecipazione alla resistenza francese. Alcuni suoi studi fecero scandalo. Fu accusato di modernismo. Nel 1960 è nominato da Giovanni XXIII consultore della Commissione Teologica preparatoria al Concilio Vaticano II. Ma la vera riabilitazione fu quando fu nominato "esperto" del Concilio. Nel 1983 Giovanni Paolo II lo crea cardinale. Con questo volume, l'autore fa un'operazione di recupero: torna a immettere nella tradizione teologica moderna la dottrina della Grazia di Sant'Agostino, che per le polemiche, in tempi lontani, di Baio (Michel de Bay, 1513 1589) e di Cornelio Giansenio (1510 1576), era rimasta vittima e dimenticata per colpa di errori nati in un particolare clima e momento storico.
