Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. with 130 colour illustions (illustrator). 1st Edition. AUTHOR FLAT SIGNED FIRST EDITION : Signed by Frank S. Smith 1996 to the title page. Uncommon therefore. A nice copy, firm and square, clean and tight, free of inscriptions. In a complete dust jacket, just light top edge turn. Nice volume. p.160, numerous illustrations. Note: Frank Sidney Smith has crammed an awful lot into his 82 years, and is more than willing to share his stories in a variety of ways that demonstrate his creativity and sheer appetite for life. Born in a Kent workhouse and evacuated to the Midlands as a child, Frank is known in art circles for his autobiographical paintings and sculptures, charting the highs and lows of his eventful past. Highly detailed and rich in history, the pick of Frank?s work was featured in his book A Brush With Life, and a 2001 Telegraph article hailed the Kings Heath resident as ?Better than L.S. Lowry?. Frank?s works are displayed proudly in Brindley place?s Number 9 The Gallery and also in Druids Heath Library, which Frank has come to regard as a home from home. Frank Sidney Smith was born in 1928 in the Thanet Union Workhouse, just as that oppressive system was ending. He never knew who his father was and was raised in a children?s home, while his mother remained in the workhouse. His wife, a schizophrenic, died from lithium poisoning after being steadily overdosed by her hospital. His son, also a schizophrenic, committed suicide by throwing himself from a block of flats.Frank Smith was driven to paint his life story both by his creative urge and by the need to come to terms with the trauma of an emotionally gruelling life. Jo Mann, the co author has a particular interest in the psychology of human survival, having written books such as Jungle Nomads of Ecuador, The Survival of Jan Little. Signed by Author(s).
