"It is a truism that wherever and whenever men formed settlements on this continent a newspaper of some kind would soon be born. This is that kind of story for the Twin Cities in Thunder Bay District at the head of Lake Superior. They represent, because of their isolated position in the centre of Canada, not only a typical but almost a classic situation. With no major Canadian market closer than 425 miles in one direction and 1,000 miles in the other, with no airlines or even roads to such markets and with one rail line in its infancy, newspapers in these two pioneer communities existed for many years in a relatively uncomplicated milieu. Commencing in 1875, more than 30 newspapers have been published in Fort William and Port Arthur. They have run all the way from small handwritten newspapers to the large size, well-printed and comprehensive newspapers of our time. Even though today's newspapers differ mightily in appearance and coverage of news from the old-time weeklies, one similarity has persisted through the years - genuine interest in and loyalty to their communities." From the Foreword. very light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has very light browning on spine and flap-folds, light edge wear/wrinkling, light rubbing, light soiling on rear panel, small stain on front panel, several edge tears with old tape repair on inside.
