Original photo-illustrated dust-jackets over full olive leatherette, with gold lettering to front covers and spines. This impressive work was prepared in anticipation of the Ninth Congress of the International Union of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Sciences, held in Nice in September 1976. The intention of the editors was to provide participants in the Congress and other interested scientists with an up-to-date and comprehensive statement of Quaternary studies in France, with an emphasis on archeology. 218 specialists, all but seven at French institutions, contributed single- and multi-authored articles, all of which have been published in French, with brief English abstracts. The articles have been organized into two volumes. The first, edited by Henry de Lumley, is devoted to Paleolithic and Mesolithic "civilizations." The second, edited by Jean Guilaine, deals with Neolithic and Protohistoric "civilizations." Each volume is divided into three main sections: (A) Chronological Framework and Environment; (B) Man and His Activities; and (C) Material Culture. This set is lavishly illustrated throughout with thousands of figs, b/w drawings, as well as b/w and color photographic reproductions. Dust-jackets partly creased along edges and spines. Previous owner's name in ink at upper margin of front free endpaper in Vol. 1, part 1. Text in French with some English. DJ in overall good- to good, bindings and interior in very good condition.
