Dipinto dal celebre fiammingo al termine del proprio soggiorno nella penisola, mostra una stesura pittorica di straordinaria qualità e l'invenzione, derivata da Rubens, suo maestro, dello scorcio riservato alla croce e alla posa drammatica del Salvatore. Il catalogo di Sagep Editori, attraverso un saggio di Daniele Sanguineti, indaga la realizzazione dell'opera nell'ambito della produzione del pittore. Una scheda di Luca Leoncini focalizza nel dettaglio il dipinto, mentre un contributo di Simone Frangioni si occupa delle vicende collezionistiche. "La mostra, tenutasi al Palazzo Reale di Genova dal 15 febbraio al 15 giugno 2008 celebra uno dei maggiori pittori genovesi del Seicento, rappresentato nel Museo di Palazzo Reale da un'importante volta affrescata raffigurante l'Allegoria della Fama e uno dei suoi capolavori, la tela con il Ratto di Proserpina. Valerio Castello si colloca, con Bernardo Strozzi, Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione detto il Grechetto e Alessandro Magnasco, nel novero dei genovesi più celebri della storia dell'arte. Tuttavia, a differenza di questi grandi maestri, la sua figura non era stata ancora al centro di un evento espositivo in grado di avvicinarne l'opera al grande pubblico. Il catalogo comprende circa cento opere di Valerio Castello, riunite per la prima volta e provenienti da chiese, collezioni private e numerosi musei italiani e stranieri tra cui il Musée des Beaux-Arts di Nancy, il Museo Nacional del Prado di Madrid, il Musée des Beaux-Arts di Nantes e l'Ermitage di San Pietroburgo. Tra i contributi dei musei italiani si distingue quello dei Musei di Strada Nuova di Genova - Palazzo Bianco e Palazzo Rosso - che hanno concesso in prestito un nucleo di otto dipinti e di dieci disegni. Alle numerose tele di Valerio Castello sono affiancati dipinti realizzati da artisti quali Parmigianino, Giulio Cesare Procaccini, Anton Van Dyck e Rubens, che, in qualche misura, contribuirono alla formazione del grande maestro genovese".
