Condition: G PB. Photos (illustrator). The Oberlin Colony was established in the forest. From earliest times Oberlin people have been concerned with trees. For several years, author Ralston has had a growing interest in Oberlin's campus' trees and their story. First there is the Historic Elm. In 1883 President Fairchild of Oberlin tells us that when the community was first settled all the trees were cleared from what is now known as Tappan Square savei this historic elm which was about 6 inches diameter at the time. Here the founders of the Oberlin Colon, John J. Shepherd and Philo P Stewart, knelt in prayer to dedicate their chosen ground to the purpose of Christian education and Christian living. Photographic cover, slight soil to back white cover.
