First Edition
Hard Cover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. First edition. Former library copy, usual internal marks, no external marks. No jacket. Corners lightly rubbed, ink name on front flyleaf. 1839 Hard Cover. xxiii, 374 pp. 8vo. Original brown blind-stamped cloth, gilt titles. Translated directly from Pierre Louis's manuscript, the original French version of which was not printed until 1844. The second important volume published on yellow fever, following the effort of Benjamin Rush printed in 1794. Louis was also known for introducing the term 'typhoid fever'. "One more, as in the case of his book on typhoid fever, one must pay homage to Louis for his cool objectivity in handling facts and for his clear analysis of results. The descriptions [of fatal cases] are masterpieces of clarity and precision and would do credit to a modern medical service or autopsy room" (Bloomfield, Bibliography of communicable diseases, 491).
