As a member of the cadet branch of the Royal House of France and a cousin of King Louis XVI of France by reason of his descent from their common ancestors Louis XIII and Louis XIV, he had earlier found it necessary to flee France during the period of the French Revolution in order to avoid imprisonment and execution, a fate that actually befell his father Louis Philippe II, Duke of Orléans. He spent 21 years in exile after he left France in 1793. He was proclaimed king in 1830 after his cousin Charles X was forced to abdicate in the wake of the events of the July Revolution of that year. His government, known as the July Monarchy, was dominated by members of a wealthy French elite and numerous former Napoleonic officials. He followed conservative policies, especially under the influence of the French statesman François Guizot during the period 1840-48. He also promoted friendship with Britain and sponsored colonial expansion, notably the conquest of Algeria. His popularity faded as economic conditions in France deteriorated in 1847, and he was forced to abdicate after the outbreak of the French Revolution of 1848. He lived out his life in exile in United Kingdom. 8vo. 9'' x 6¼''. Contains 285 + i printed pages of French text. From the private library of C. S. B. 8vo. 2¼ pp. on bifolium. To a member of his administration as head of the House of Orléans, concerning the recipient's role in an official event. The context of the letter remains unclear; Louis Philippe refers to an "assemblée des Canaux", which could be an abbreviation for Cardinals or a somewhat obscure synonym for officials or ministers who act as intermediaries to a prince as defined in Furetière's dictionary. Louis Philippe informs the recipient of his decision not to entrust him with an official role during the assembly, following the advice of a man named Maurice - potentially Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand, who was a close advisor to Louis Philippe. Apparently, the occasion was very important to the future king and he did not wish to offend anyone, trying to "obfuscate as little as possible" with respect to "people who are disposed to bitterness and being outraged". In closing, Louis Philippe quotes the proverb "when in doubt, leave it out" to justify his decision. - Minor browning. With a tear to the fold minimally affecting the text and a restored tear to the counter-leaf, not touching the text.
