Aylmer Firebrace (1888-1972) joined the London Fire Brigade after wartime naval service, in 1919 and became chief officer in 1938. In 1941 he was appointed to lead the new National Fire Service and became head of all firefighting throughout Britain, until the local brigades were reinstated in 1947.
