Hard cover dust wrapper 382pp b&w photos, charmingly illustrated in colour by the author. Some wear on edges, small tears on dw, now protected. Half title clipped. Else very good. Includes scene setting commentary by Scott and contemporary illustrations. The extraordinary diaries of Thomas Cairns Livingstone are idiosyncratic daily records of a middle-class Glasgow household, over a period spanning shortly before the Great War to the early 1930s. Thomas Cairns Livingstone, a mercantile book keeper, began his diaries in 1913, when he, his wife Agnes and their son 'wee Tommy' set up house in the Glasgow neighbourhood of Govanhill. Livingstone dutifully recorded each day's events in his Collins diaries, from small domestic dramas to troop movements as news of the Great War filtered back to the anxious home front. Rescued during a house clearance, the intricate details of these journals -- interspersed throughout with Livingstone's wonderfully warm and idiosyncratic illustrations -- provide a priceless record of the impression world events were making on the ordinary people at home and an extraordinary chronicle of the ups and downs of working-class life in the period immediately before, during and after the First World War.The details of the family's early life, notes about the (usually dreich) Glasgow weather, and comments on the carnage on the front and on the high seas, are written and illustrated with such warmth and charm that the story of this very ordinary household in the early part of the 20th century becomes completely addictive.

1st edition. The Peace Ballot. The Official History by Dame Adelaide Livingstone (Secretary, National Declaration Committee) in collaboration with Marjorie Scott Johnston with A Statistical Survey of the Results by Walter Ashley. Conclusion by Vicount Cecil(Chairman, National Declaration Committee). "The National Declaration on the League of Nations and Armaments(popularly known as The Peace Ballot) was an attempt to vocalise public opinion on the scale of a General Election, but on a single issue. It was a constructive democratic experiment of major importance. For the first time in history, British people had the opportunity of making themselves heard on a first-class issue other than, and above, party politics, and free from the heated atmosphere and rivalries of a General Election." Pp.64, pencil inscription "Jimmy from the author (of most of it) with deep respect June 29th 1935" (Provenance of Walter Ashley)written in in an 'arrow' diagonal to the front free endpaper. Occasional light spotting throughout, loose sheet (The Peace Ballot - Supplementary Sheet) giving "Total Votes:Latest Figures" but with pencil annotation, loosely enclosed. Black cloth, gilt title to spine.Yellow Gollancz dustwrapper is darkened to spine and edges and has edge tears and losses. G/G. **Walter Ashley's name is in smaller type than that of Dame Adelaide and Viscount Cecil both to the dustwrapper and the title page - hence his inscription hints that as the statistician he wrote most of the book!.
