Pamphlet. 14, [1] p.; 18.5 cm. [First printed in 1952] `I believe that all we have to say concerning Christ and His cross would be more deeply based if we would take our courage into our hands and say more about the abiding ministries of the Holy Spirit and the Exalted Christ. There are signs that Trinity Sunday is being observed more widely, but many of us have to confess a certain neglect of duty in speaking of these great themes. Some of us short-circuit or theology by identifying the Holy Spirit and the Risen Christ mainly because in our experience we find it impossible to distinguish between them as some of the mystics have claimed to do. This attitude is much to be regretted. In some respects the two Persons share what Anderson Scott calls an `equivalence of function'. The Spirit works in us and Christ is in and with us even unto the end of the days. But in great ranges of activity the work of each is distinct. The Spirit strengthens, intercedes, rebukes, sustains, convicts both the individual and the community; the Exalted Lord intercedes, but also rules, and directs, seated at the right hand of God. The one is `the friend from court', the other `the friend at court'. Probably, the fact that we are compelled to use spatial imagery accounts for our neglect of that ministry on high to which the New Testament and the primitive Christian kerygma give such pronounced emphasis.' (p. 12 f.) Good, stapled, in orig. green wrapper. Margin lt. stained.

Softcover. 2nd printing. 46 p.; 18.5 cm. (A. S. Peake memorial lecture ; 1) [First printed in 1956] "The very fact that the Old Testament has more than one tendency and in some cases embraces opposite tendencies isthe very source of its greatness. This apparent oppositeness may sometimes be due to mistaken judgement and untoward zeal on the part of the writer, but there are instances when both are right. For instance, if Ezra and Nehemiah had not established the Habdalah policy and built `the middle wall of partition' around Judaism, it is quite plain from what we know of subsequent history that Judaism would have been lost in the confusion of races and tongues. The Jews could never have stood firm against Hellenism without the rigid standards of Judaism; indeed,it is plain that the Greek-loving Seleucid kings--even Antiochus IV, against whose levies Judas Maccabaeus fought--had as many supporters among the Jews as Judas had. And yet it is plain that it was the same rigidity which nailed Jesus to the Cross. Paul saw this, and this is at the root of his violent and bitter fight against the Judaizing Christians of his day. .The Christian holds that Judaism took the wrong path, with the result that when the true Messiah came, the Jews did not recognize Him, but rejected Him & had Him done to death. What was the point at which Judaism took the wrong turning? It was when the wall which had been built to protect,to stop alien influences from getting in, became a wall to stop God's salvation from getting out.It was when holiness came to mean `separated from' the Gentiles instead of `separated to' God. .The Jews were right when they realized that the Golden Thread in Scripture is the action of God the Saviour.'
