Encuadernación de tapa blanda. Condition: Nuevo. ¿A dónde vamos?.

Soft cover. Condition: As New. ~ First and only issue of this magazine of the first Portuguese modernism, which appeared with the Algarve futurist artist Carlos Filipe Porfírio as its official director, while who really directed it was the painter Guilherme de Santa-Rita (Santa-Rita Pintor). Texts by Almada Negreiros, Fernando Pessoa, Mário de Sá-Carneiro, Bettencourt Rebello, Raul Leal, translations of texts of Italian futurist Marinetti and the "Futurist Manifesto of Lust" (Manifeste futuriste de la luxure) by Valentine de Saint-Point, poems in French by Guillaume Apollinaire and Blaise Cendrars and also the "Futurist Ultimatum to the Portuguese Generations of the 20th Century", text read by Almada in a Futurist soirée that took place on 14 April 1917 at the Teatro República in Lisbon. However, the most famous "specimen" is «Ultimatum» by Álvaro de Campos (heteronym of Fernando Pessoa) which, though not pro-German (being anti everything, Allied and German), contains caustic slurs on the Allies, reason why, having appeared in the booksellers' windows on October 31st 1917, was seized two days later by the police ~ This edition includes two very important studies on Portuguese Futurism, one by Nuno Júdice: "The Futurism in Portugal" (12 pp.), and one by Teolinda Gersão: "For the Study of Literary Futurism in Portugal" (20 pp.) ~ Publisher's wrappers ~ XL+42p ~ 32x23x1cm. ~ As New, just an imperceptible wrinkle at spine bottom ~ LANGUAGE: Português & Français / Portuguese Literature / Futurism / Avant-garde // We accept PayPal & EU bank transfer in EUROS //. Condition: Fine. ~ Foreword by Nuno Júdice for this edition ~ COMPLETE RUN BOUND IN ONE VOLUME of one of the most important Portuguese literary journals, representing a platform for launching aesthetic proposals common to the "old" and "new" modernist generations: that of «Orpheu» (1915) and that of «Presença» (1927). Directed by Almada Negreiros, Sudoeste had three issues, published in Lisbon between June and November 1935. A fourth issue has been planned but never published. The first two issues are unipersonal, presented as «Cadernos de Almada Negreiros» and written by Almada from one end to the other with just a quote borrowed from a book of Norwegian oceanographer Johan Hjort shoehorned in between. The third and final number is the most significant from a historical-literary point of view, collecting works by 16 collaborators, those of the extinct magazine «Orpheu» and those of «Presença», then still being issued. The essay texts published by Almada in the first two issues of the magazine undergo the purpose of analyzing the European cultural, social and political moment in a historical context marked by the rise and triumph of nationalist and dictatorial regimes (Mussolini, Hitler, Salazar), but in opposition to the basic principles of these regimes. This is followed by one of the best-known texts from Southwest, «Civilization and Culture», in which Almada defines civilization as "a collective phenomenon" and culture as "an individual phenomenon". Cf. Dutra Faria: «SW. Sudoeste - Europa-Portugal» in Fradique, Lisboa, nº 73, 1935 & Clara Cabrée Rocha: «Sudoeste» in MODERN!SMO. Arquivo Virtual da Geração de Orpheu ~ The 2th issue inserts 2 plates with the drawings «O Céu» and «Madrid 30» by Almada, very rare because they were suppressed by the censorship. The 3rd one bears two plates with drawings by Sarah Affonso (1899-1983) and the expressionist painter Mário Eloy (1900-1951). ~ Publisher's wrappers ~ VII+31+[3]p ; 44+[4]p : 44+[2]p+16p ~ 25x18x2cm. ~ In fine condition with just a small closed tear on toe of spine ~ LANGUAGE: Português / Portuguese Literature / Modernism / Avant-garde // We accept PayPal & EU bank transfer in EUROS. Condition: As New. ~ COMPLETE RUN of the most famous magazine of the first Portuguese Modernism. The first issue appeared in March 1915 and the second in June, and it was the last. The third, to appear in October 1917, was never published, although the uncorrected page proofs of Orpheu 3 printed in July 1917 and reproduced in this edition have been fortunately preserved. In addition to these, the last 8 pages of this third tract include: 1) a fragment of «Saudação a Walt Whitman» by Álvaro de Campos that Pessoa never got to finish although he had announced its publication in Orpheu 3, but which is missing in the typographic proofs; and 2) the poem by Camilo Pessanha «Os violoncelos» that Pessoa had expressed the intention of including in a relevant place in Orpheu 3. This is how Pessoa's initial project for Orpheu 3 has been reconstructed. This edition is enriched with reproductions of 4 cubist paintings by Santa-Rita Pintor in Orpheu 2 and another 4 works by Amadeu de Souza Cardoso in Orpheu 3. ~ Wrappers. Orpheu 1: Cover originally designed by José Pacheco. Orpheu 3: Cover designed by João Louro (1963) for this edition ~ 2f+83p; 2f+85-164p; 165-227p+[8]p ~ 24x16x2cm. ~ As New, fitted within the original thin film protectors ~ LANGUAGE: Português / Portuguese Literature / Modernism / Avant-garde // We accept PayPal & EU bank transfer in EUROS //.

First Edition
The only work of poetry by the openly gay amateur philosopher who joined Pessoa's circle of modernist writers in 1915. Leal is best known for his Sodoma Divinisada, published in 1923, but he also dabbled in the occult and was briefly involved with Aleister Crowley ("Met Leal. Don't like him. There's something definitely wrong about him." See Castro, Fernando Pessoa's Modernity Without Frontiers: Influences, Dialogues, Responses.) He was also involved for a time with Gabriele d'Annunzio and Filippo Marinetti and other "ultra- Futurists" and was the founder of a Paracletian Church, with himself as the self-designated Henoch, prophet of the Holy Ghost and Divine Paraclete. See da Silva, Ultra-Futurism, Occultism and Queer Politics. This collection of poems relates to the demonic powers and the force of darkness that became subjects of interest to the surrealists. Very good, light wear and yellowing to covers, spine is fragile with partial splitting, light spotting, photographic frontispiece of the author. Rare.
