This classic was selected in a 100 Greatest Books Ever Written series. This is one of the many famous books that were written in prison. It has been translated into hundreds of tongues. And after the Bible, probably no book has been so much read by the English peoples. Says Stopford Brooke, 'Its form is almost epic; its dramatic dialogue, its clear types of character, its vivid descriptions, have given an equal but a different pleasure to children and men, to the villager and the scholar -ONE THOUSAND BEST BOOKS." This edition uses Mary Godolphin;s 1884 shortened text which was edited to appeal to children. Although less that 20% of the full work, it retains every important character and episode of this classic tale.
