Dort, im Teppichsaal der Ikone der modernen Architektur von Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, befinden sich dessen berühmte Sessel und laden ein, darin Platz zu nehmen. Eindrucksvoll beschreibt Terence Riley in seiner Einführung der Publikation Mies in Berlin die Retrospektive des Museum of Modern Art in New York zu Mies Werk aus dem Jahre 1947. Der Architekt selbst war für das Ausstellungsdesign verantwortlich und präsentierte seine bemerkenswerten Projekte aus Deutschland neben den ersten amerikanischen Arbeiten auf sechs mal vier Meter großen Fotowänden. Der optisch wie haptisch sehr ansprechende Band zeigt das architektonische Oeuvre von Mies van der Rohe in Berlin. Der 1886 in Aachen geborene Ludwig Mies war 1905 nach Berlin gekommen, wo er bereits zwei Jahre später als 21-Jähriger sein erstes Haus baute. Von 1908 bis 1912 arbeitete er für Peter Behrens, bei dem er sich das Wissen zum Entwurf im großen Format aneignete. 1913 machte sich Mies selbstständig und plante bis 1937 verschiedene Bauten und Projekte, darunter einen spektakulären Entwurf für ein Hochhaus an der Berliner Friedrichstraße, das Denkmal für Karl Liebknecht und Rosa Luxemburg in Berlin-Friedrichsfeld, den städtebaulichen Entwurf sowie einen Wohnblock für die Weißenhofsiedlung in Stuttgart oder das Haus Tugenhat in Brünn. Ab 1930 leitete er das Bauhaus in Dessau, nach 1932 in Berlin, bis er die Einrichtung 1933 aus Protest gegen drohende Einschränkungen durch die Nationalsozialisten auflöste. 1938 emigrierte er in die USA. Für die Planung und Errichtung der Neuen Nationalgalerie in Berlin kehrte er zwischen 1962 und 1968 noch einmal nach Deutschland zurück. 1969 starb Mies van der Rohe im Alter von 83 Jahren in Chicago. In kenntnisreichen Essays beleuchten die Autoren das Werk von Mies van der Rohe aus den unterschiedlichsten Blickwinkeln. So betrachtet Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani die Positionen des Meisters der Moderne mit seinen Hochhausentwürfen im Kontext des großstädtischen Berlin der 1920er-Jahre oder Barry Bergdoll erläutert Mies Wohnhausentwürfe zwischen der Tradition der deutschen Romantik mit ihren Auffassungen über Landschaft, Natur und Bewusstheit und der deutschen Gartenreformbewegung zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts. Im Mittelteil des Buches werden die rund 30 Projekte der Berliner Schaffensphase in Texten, Plänen und zahlreichen Fotoaufnahmen eingehend dargestellt, wobei vor allem die Fotocollagen zu nicht realisierten Bauten ein beeindruckendes Bild von Mies van der Rohes monumentaler Vorstellungskraft wiedergeben. Die Irritation über die Farbigkeit des Schutzumschlages wird nach den einführenden Texten aufgelöst. In seinem fotografischen Projekt l.m.v.d.r. hat der Fotokünstler Thomas Ruff verschiedene Bauten von Mies van der Rohe durch digital bearbeitete Stereofotografien und Collagen popularisiert. In diesem Sinne gelingt es der Publikation nicht nur, die Berliner Phase des Baumeisters umfangreich darzustellen, sondern für dessen Werk auch neue Sichtweisen zu schaffen. Ludwig Ludwig Mies van der Rohe ist einer der herausragendsten Baumeister des 20. Jahrhunderts. Bis zu seiner Emigration in die USA 1938 war er in Berlin tätig, wo in den 20er Jahren seine revolutionären Entwürfe entstanden, die einen entscheidenden Einfluß auf das Architekturgeschehen hatten.
