Clean pages with noticeable tanning and foxing throughout. Minor water staining to pastedowns and free endpapers. Bookseller sticker stuck to back pastedown. Binding is slightly loose. Boards have heavy edge-wear with bumping to corners, crushing to spine ends and rub wear all over. Gilt lettering is darkened. Moderate tanning to spine and edges with crushing to spine ends. Minor splits to spine ends and corners causing cloth to be frayed. Visible wear marks to boards.

Front endpaper darkened. Rear free endpaper neatly removed. Light scattered foxing in text. A better copy than this sounds. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. Bound in the original brown cloth, with blind-stamped decorations. Gilt lettering on the spine has faded some but is still legible. The following quotation comes from Smith's entry in the DNB: "His drollery produced uproarious merriment. Mackintosk is described as rolling on the floor, and his servants had often to leave the room in fits of laughter. Hardcover. Condition: Good. [nd], ca 1870s; advertisements at rear dated April 1878, and this copy has a bookplate at front paste down indicating it was a school prize in 1881. Black leather with gilt spine titles in red leather title window, gilt decoration at spine and boards. The leather is rubbed and worn, with spots of fraying at corners. Spine square. Front outer hinge starting at top inch; front inner hinge split, exposing the thread binding. Top thread has split, but the middle and bottom are secure. Rear inner hinge also faintly cracked, with all three threads holding strong there. Binding else sound. Marbled page edges, rubbed and faded. Marbled endsheets, a little toned to margins but otherwise sharp and bright. Pages lightly toned, text unmarked.
