Contemporary lightly diced russia, sides with roll tool border of floral sprays gilt, spines gilt in six compartments, inner dentelles gilt, marbled endpapers. One large folding map hand-coloured in outline and 18 folding maps and plans (some hand-coloured in outline); 8 single page plates and 3 double-page plates showing two or more subjects. Some offsetting of the plates, spines lightly faded, generally a very clean, handsome set. A tall well-margined set. Large paper(?). A very uncommon edition of this famous work first published in 1788. "It is difficult to overestimate the importance of Anacharsis in the development of French neo-classicism and in the creation of philhellenic sentiment. Though there had been earlier attempts to popularize and disseminate what was known of Greek antiquity, none had been as influential and successful in 'educating Europe to an appreciation of the life and "sensibility" of the ancient Greek' (Spenser). Barthelemy was keeper of the French national numismatic collections. He worked for 30 years on his chef-d'oeuvre, which achieved an immediate and international success.Barthhelemy's work has been reprinted many times in all formats" (Blackmer). (Cf. Blackmer 83 - first edition).
