Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Kermit Adler (illustrator). 1st Edition. Stated First American edition. This book was well taken care of, which is not surprising since it was owned by the illustrator, Kermit Adler. While I had listed five other of his books, four of which he'd written his name in, he did not do so in this one (all of those five books have been sold). There are what appears to be some lightly penciled letters (possibly a name) off the top edge of the blank front end paper, but I can't make them out. As you can see from the photographs, the covers are exceptionally clean, and the black lettering on the spine is nicely bright. There is a crease just above the front bottom corner. It doesn't carry over to any the pages. There is slight fading of the covers green at the top and bottom edges of the spine. There is also a little bit of the usual crinkling at the spine ends. The cover edges are in very good shape. The corners have only the tiniest bit of superficial rubbing. The top page edge has a speckling of light, tiny spots but none of it makes its way onto the actual pages. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The pages appear to be spotless. I'm not finding any soiling. The white inside covers and end papers are very clean as well. The pages are in terrific condition. I'm not finding any creasing. There are no markings. No attachments of any kind. And the aforementioned penciled letters represent the only writing to be found anywhere. All of Mr. Adler's illustrations are in excellent condition. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I don't see any soiling. However, there is very distinct toning off three of the edges of the rear cover. There is also a sliver of loss at the top edge of the front cover, and a tiny bit of rubbing/scuffing at the two front corners. There is also a bit of the same at the bottom edge of the spine. The flaps are in very nice condition. There is a very thin strip of toning off their top edges. There is no soiling and no conspicuous wear. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. From the dust jacket: 'Ivan Kusan, a young Yugoslavian writer here introduced for the first time to American readers, has written a taut, fast-moving mystery, spiced with quiet humor and the color of its unusual setting.' As mentioned, this book came from the home of Kermit and Pat Adler. Kermit Adler illustrated a few other books. He spent many years working as the art director and illustrator in Lord & Taylor's advertising department before becoming a co-creative director there, a position he shared with his wife. He left Lord & Taylor's for a short time to become the art director at Saks Fifth Avenue, before returning to Lord & Taylor as the art director and creative director. Kermit Adler was also a watercolorist, exhibiting in one-man and group shows.
