"Billie Jean King's life has been as colorful, as precedent-shattering, and as determined as her performance on the tennis courts. Now, she tells her own story in a forthright autobiography that is at once a moving personal history of a woman who always perceived herself as a distinct individual, and a behind-the-scenes look at the world of women's sports. Billie Jean King has spent much of her life as a trailblazer: as a young girl from a working-class family playing the rich kid's game of tennis; as a female superstar in a sports world dominated by men; as a leader and spokesperson for women's equality of opportunity and, recently, as a celebrity called upon to make public the details of her private life. As she recalls her own life and career, and reflects on changing attitudes toward women both in and out of the sports world, King emerges as a thoughtful, sensitive person, an image far different from the one the press has usually imposed upon her. She writes of her life as a touring athlete, of the men and women who share that world, and the friendships and intense rivalries that develop. She tells about the agonies and pressure of becoming number one, about the difficulties of living without any privacy, and, most of all, how she has been affected, both as a competitor and as a woman. With rare and touching honestly, she evaluates her sometimes troubled marriage and calmly relates the story of her over-publicized affair with Marilyn Barnett. Billie Jean is a straightforward, often amusing account of the tangled relationship between women's sports and the women's movement in the last two decades, and it is the story of a woman who has, finally, reconciled the tensions between being an athlete and being a woman." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First UK edition. From Wikipedia: "Billie Jean King (born 1943), also known as BJK, is an American former world No. 1 tennis player. King won 39 Grand Slam titles: 12 in singles, 16 in women's doubles, and 11 in mixed doubles. King was a member of the victorious United States team in seven Federation Cups and nine Wightman Cups. For three years, she was the U.S. captain in the Federation Cup. King is an advocate of gender equality and has long been a pioneer for equality and social justice. In 1973, at the age of 29, she famously won the "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match against the 55-year-old Bobby Riggs. King was also the founder of the Women's Tennis Association and the Women's Sports Foundation. She was instrumental in persuading cigarette brand Virginia Slims to sponsor women's tennis in the 1970s and went on to serve on the board of their parent company Philip Morris in the 2000s. Regarded by many as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, King was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1987. The Fed Cup Award of Excellence was bestowed on her in 2010. In 1972, she was the joint winner, with John Wooden, of the Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year award and was one of the Time Persons of the Year in 1975. She has also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year lifetime achievement award. She was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1990, and in 2006, the USTA National Tennis Center in New York City was renamed the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. In 2018, she won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2020, the Federation Cup was renamed the Billie Jean King Cup in her honor. In 2022, she was awarded the French Legion of Honour." This is a near fine copy in brown cloth with gilt titles on the spine. Very slight bumping at the corners, but no other marks or damage. The Unclipped DJ has slight sunning at the top of the jacket and tiny chips at the jacket spine ends. It is inscribed by the author on the back of the half title page "To Naureen, Practice, practice, watch the ball, and most of all have fun. Believe and you will. Billie Jean King" . CH.
