"In dem Bibliothekschrank der Frau Caroline v. Städel erbittet sich dies Heft eine kleine Stelle zum freundschaftl. Andenken der Verfasser ." - Graf von Bentzel-Sternau stammte aus Mainz. Nach Jahren in badischen Diensten und als Minister des Großherzogs von Frankfurt, Karl Theodor von Dalberg, zog er sich dann 1813 in den Ruhestand zurück. Als Abgeordneter der bayer. Ständekammer war er dann noch von 1825-28 tätig. 1827 konvertierte er in Frankfurt a. M. von der kath. zur protestantischen Kirche. Außer politischen Schriften veröffentlichte er regelmäßig Erzählungen, Romane und Dramen, wobei der Einfluß von Jean Paul deutlich wurde. Mit der Familie des Frankfurter Bankiers und Mäzen Johann Friedrich Städel war Graf von Bentzel-Sternau gut bekannt. ? Unregelmäßig beschnitten.".

V, 468, 7, 9. - Bentzel-Sternau (1767-1849) war ab 1808 badischer Minister des Innern und lebte an 1813 abwechselnd auf seinem Gute Emmerichshofen bei Aschaffenburg und auf dem Landhause Maria Halden bei Erlenbach am Züricher See. - Bei Bentzel stammte die Humoristik aus dem Kontraste der vornehmen Weltsitte und der individuell überlegenen Bildung und trug deshalb mehr den Charakter des Spottes als der Wehmut. Seine Ideale, an denen er die Welt maß, gehörten mehr dem Verstande als dem Herzen, das bei Meyern, Hölderlin und Jean Paul vorwaltet. (vgl. Goed.). Dies wird bereits im "Vorwort" deutlich: "An seine Hinterlassene. Laut schallt unsere Klage um den großen Verklärten; wir blicken in tiefer Trauer dem Verschwundenen nach, und herbe Thränen fließen.". - Schnitt minimal gebräunt u. Wieland, den er 1791 als kurmainzischer Regierungsrat in Erfurt kennengelernt hatte, hielt ihn für einen Nebenbuhler von Jean Paul, der aber unstreitbar Talent habe. ? Karl Christian Ernst Graf von Bentzel-Sternau bittet Wilmans Buchhandlung einen Betrag für Grömmes Fabelbibliothek zu verrechnen.Nach rechtswissenschaftlichen Studien wurde Bentzel zu Sternau 1791 kurmainzischer Regierungsrat unter Karl Theodor von Dalberg in Erfurt. 1803 war er Staatsrat des Kur-Erzkanzlers in Regensburg und 1804 Geheimer Staatsrat. 1806 trat er in badische Dienste, wurde 1808 Ministerialdirektor und 1810 Oberhofgerichtspräsident in Mannheim.Dalberg, inzwischen von Napoleon eingesetzter Großherzog von Frankfurt, ernannte ihn 1811 zu seinem Staats- und Finanzminister. Er war darüber hinaus u.a. verantwortlich für die Judenemanzipation und ihre bürgerliche Gleichstellung.Nachdem das Großherzogtum Frankfurt im Herbst 1813 von den gegen Napoleon verbündeten deutschen Mächten besetzt worden war aufgelöst wurde es erst im Sommer 1814 , zog sich Bentzel-Sternau ins Privatleben zurück. Er lebte abwechselnd auf Schloss Emmerichshofen und seinem Landsitz am Zürcher See. In den folgenden Jahren wirkte er als Herausgeber und Schriftsteller.Seine liberale engagierte Haltung bewies er erneut als Abgeordneter der Bayerischen Ständekammer in den Jahren 1825 bis 1828. 1832 sympathisierte er mit den Teilnehmern des Hambacher Fests und schickte diesen einen Brief zur Bekundung seines Beistands.1827 konvertierte er von der katholischen zur evangelischen Konfession.

Th. von Dalberg (1744-1817), Kurfürst und Erzkanzler von Mainz, 1806 Fürstprimas des Rheinbundes, ein Freund und Gönner Schillers, Goethes, Wielands und Herders, der im vorliegenden Werk eine formalistische Ästhetik vertritt. Übersetzer ist der Publizist Christian Ernst Graf von Bentzel-Sternau (1767-1849), der Dalberg 1811 auch als Staats- und Finanzminister dienen sollte (Goedeke 17, 137, Nr. 7). Der Rücken berieben und an den Kapitalen etwas abgestossen, insgesamt handelt es sich jedoch um ein noch gut erhaltenes Exemplar mit nur leichten Gebrauchsspuren.
