Darauf gingen dieselben auch ein, bereisten und beschauten mehrere Gegenden des bischöflichen Sprengels und wählten endlich die Stätte, wo jetzt das Gotteshaus zur Pforte liegt . (Chronik des Abtes Theoderich 1274/80). Mit diesen Worten beschreibt ein Pfortenser Abt etwa 150 Jahre später das Ereignis der Klosterverlegung. An Stelle eines seit 1127 existierenden Benediktinernonnen-, später Mönchskonventes siedelte der Naumburger Bischof Udo I. im Jahre 1132 in Schmölln bei Altenburg ein Zisterziensermönchskloster an, das jedoch infolge der Lage auf einem Hügel und insbesondere inmitten einer weithin slawisch-heidnischen Bevölkerung bereits 1137 in die unmittelbare Nähe des Bistumssitzes verlegt wurde: ans rechte Ufer der Saale bei der älteren Ansiedlung Kösen (Stiftungsurkunde vom 13. Januar 1138). Hier errichteten die Mönche die für einen klösterlichen Betrieb erforderlichen Bauten wie Kirche, Wohn- und Versammlungsräume. Daß die Ortsbezeichnung ad portam auf eine ältere Kirche vom Ende des 10. Jahrhunderts verweise, deren große Arkadenbögen eines Westwerkes und Kirchenschiffes sich in der heutigen Mühle westlich der Klosterkirche erhalten hätten, ist eine Vermutung Werner Hirschfelds, die zwar seitdem (1933) nicht weiter verfolgt worden ist, aber wohl doch wenig Wahrscheinlichkeit besitzt. Auch die Behauptung, die Mönche hätten bis zur Fertigstellung ihrer ersten Gebäude im älteren Wirtschaftshof Kösen gewohnt, ist nicht bewiesen. Vielmehr dürften dabei ältere chronikalische Überlieferungen zum soge- - nannten Romanischen Haus , einem aus dem späten 12. Jahrhundert stammenden Wohn- und Wirtschaftsbau des Klosters, bestimmend gewesen sein. Zahlreiche Schenkungen machten das Kloster bis Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts zu einer der wohlhabendsten Abteien im mitteldeutschen Raum. Schon 1175 war es in der Lage, zwei Tochtergründungen in Leubus/Schlesien und Altzella/Sachsen mit Mönchen zu besetzen. Im Saaletal förderten die Zisterzienser neben der Landwirtschaft vor allem den Mühlenbetrieb, den Bau von Brücken, Wehren, Uferbefestigungen, den Weinbau (1153 der Köppelsberg erwähnt). 2 gutes Exemplar, ordentlich Gern können sie Ihr Buch per Rechnung bestellen. Es gibt einfach zu viele bedeutende Bauwerke, die immer wieder den Vorrang beanspruchen. Aus der »ganz normalen« Alltagsarbeit des Sachgebiets Bauforschung im Landesamt für Denkmalpflege und Archäologie Sachsen-Anhalt entstanden, wären auch die Ergebnisse der Untersuchungen in der Stadtkirche St. Sixti in Ermsleben vermutlich auf längere Sicht in den Akten versteckt geblieben - wenn es nicht einen besonderen Anlass gegeben hätte, kurzfristig eine Veröffentlichung vorzubereiten. Erwähnungen der Ermslebener Stadtkirche in der bau- und kunstgeschichtlichen sowie kulturtouristischen Literatur sind äußerst selten: In den größeren Überblicksdarstellungen zur mittelalterlichen Architektur und zu Kirchen in Sachsen-Anhalt fehlt sie vollkommen. Das überrascht, hat jedoch mit ihren zahlreichen Umbauten und »Modernisierungen« seit dem 17. Jahrhundert zu tun. Georg Dehio, ein bedeutender deutscher Kunsthistoriker und namengebend für das von ihm initiierte Handbuch der deutschen Kunstdenkmäler, schreibt 1924 zur Stadtkirche in Ermsleben: »gänzlich deformiert, interessant nur die Spur ehemaliger rom. OTürme« (romanischer Osttürme). Erst die kurzen Bemerkungen in den Ausgaben der Dehio-Handbücher von 1976 und 2002 sowie die jüngsten bauhistorischen Untersuchungen haben sie in ein völlig neues Licht gerückt. Letztere erfolgten seit 1998 und in größeren Abständen als Vorbereitung auf statisch notwendige Instandsetzungsmaßnahmen im Turmbereich und im Chor.' Eine erste Beschäftigung mit dem Bau fand im Juli 1998 statt, als eine Drainageschachtung um den Chor herum zu begutachten war. Diese wurde während der Sanierungsarbeiten bis 2010 durch eingehende Beobachtungen am Mauerwerk der Kirche fortgesetzt. Mit den archivalischen Quellen zur Baugeschichte der Kirche hatte sich der Verfasser bereits seit Ende der 1980er Jahre im Kontext seiner Forschungen zum Kloster Konradsburg befasst.»[ . ] da dieses sämmtliche Gemäuer von schlechten Steinen erbauet ist [ . ].« Diese anklagende Feststellung von Oberprediger Friedrich August Boysen vom 2. April 1813 macht die Hauptursache der seit zweihundert Jahren anstehenden statischen Probleme anschaulich: Nicht der Baugrund, sondern in Folge von Umbauten beförderte, tiefgreifende Schäden des aufgehenden Mauerwerks sind verantwortlich. Die Quellentexte belegen dies eindrücklich.
