"Was der Leser hier in der Hand hält und zunächst vielleicht etwas ratlos hin und her gewendet hat, ist ein sogenannter Zwillingsband oder dos à dos (frz., etwa »Rücken an Rücken«), eine alte Buchform, bei der zwei für sich geheftete Buchblöcke gleichen Formats verschränkt und mit den Titelblättern nach außen einen gemeinsamen Rückdeckel haben. Solche Einbandspielerei ist bereits aus dem 16. Jahrhundert nachweisbar; in der Zeit der Reformation finden sich Streit- und Gegenschrift so, wie siamesische Zwillinge, zwangsvereint, später haben protestantische Erbauungsbücher gelegentlich diese Gestalt. Besonders in der Zeit des Kuriositätengeschmacks (17. / 18. Jahrhundert) geben Buchbinder gern derartige Beweise ihrer Kunstfertigkeit, und den Zwillingsbänden treten bald erfindungsreiche Zusammenbindungen von drei bis zu acht Buchblöcken zur Seite. Die Berliner Staatsbibliothek besitzt einen ??Sechslingsband«, der sechs zwischen 1571 und 1575 in Breslau gedruckte Erbauungsbücher vereint; ein weiterer solcher mit zwei größeren und vier kleineren Gebetbüchern gehört zu den Curiosa der Leipziger Stadtbibliothek. Dies Bändchen soll an die alte Buchform erinnern, und um den Pegasus so recht »von vorn und von hinten« reiten zu können, stehen bekannten und weniger bekannten Originalen deutschsprachiger Lyrik (in einem Band) entsprechende Parodien (jeweils an gleicher Stelle des anderen Bandes) gegenüber." (Aus dem Nachwort) Herbert Kästner (* 1. September 1936 in Leipzig) ist ein deutscher Mathematiker, Autor, Herausgeber und Bibliophiler. Neben seiner beruflichen Tätigkeit widmete sich Herbert Kästner vor allem der Bibliophilie. Ab 1980 war er Mitglied des Vorstandes und ab 1988 Vorsitzender der Pirckheimer-Gesellschaft Leipzig und Mitglied der Gesellschaft Leipziger Bibliophilen-Abend". Er ist Herausgeber der Bibliografie der Insel-Bücherei des Insel Verlages. Karl-Georg Hirsch (* 13. Mai 1938 in Breslau) ist ein deutscher Grafiker und Holzstecher sowie Hochschullehrer, der durch zahlreiche Buchillustrationen und Grafikfolgen bekannt geworden ist. Sein umfangreiches uvre konzentriert sich auf die Technik des Holzstichs, umfasst aber auch Zeichnungen, Holzschnitte und Radierungen. Hirsch arbeitet vor allem mit Zwischentönen im einfachen Schwarzweiß; Farbe verwendet er, abgesehen von wenigen handkolorierten Blättern, nur ausnahmsweise. Künstlerische Inspiration schöpft er vor allem aus Lyrik und Texten der kürzeren Prosa, für die er kongeniale Illustrationen schafft. Dabei arbeitet er mit Dichtern und Schriftstellern sowie Typographen eng zusammen, um das Buch als Endprodukt eines solchen künstlerischen Schaffensprozesses als organische Einheit von Text und Illustration zur Wirkung auf den Leser zu bringen.
