A remarkable ground-level account of life on the road entertaining the troops. The descriptions of places are excellent, the character cameos are simultaneously witty and honest with no punches pulled at times, JG not suffering fools gladly - for instance, she is scathing about ENSA in general and the running of it. But she also acknowledges the competent managers and it is interesting to see names pop up who later became well known well known actors and entertainers. A true professional herself, JG never lets her occasional low moments affect her performances and is touchingly encouraged by appreciative audience feedback. She and her accompanist, Viola Tunnard, an artiste in her own right, worked long and hard often under harsh travelling conditions and not always ideal locations yet considered themselves fortunate in having such opportunities. hardcover, 6¼" x 9½", with dust jacket 300 pages Here are the absorbing, thrilling, often hilarious - but secret - wartime journals of Joyce Grenfell as she travelled around the Mediterranean and Asia in 1944-45 entertaining the troops. This book is essentially a journal which she left in the final eighteen months of the Second World War - against the rules - while travelling on behalf of ESNA, officially the Entertainments National Service Association (or affectionately known as 'Every Night Something Awful'). VERY GOOD book in VERY GOOD unclipped dust jacket.
