Book
Hardcover. Condition: New. Contents: Preface. 1. Introduction to Pahari drawings. 2. Catalogue and illustrations. 3. Basohli school. 4. Guler and Kangra schools. 5. Chamba school. 6. Miscellaneous schools. 7. Map. 8. Rajas of the Punjab hill states. Bibliography. Pahari drawings are sketches by artists of the states located in the foothills of the western Himalayas. These states, some thirty in all were ruled by Hindu rajas, and comprised Jammu (Kashmir), the northern hill region of the Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Garhwal (in modern-day Uttaranchal). From about C.E. 1630, court painting flourished in this remote and beautiful region thanks in large part to long periods of peace and prosperity. Over the past sixty years many museums and collectors have avidly sought out Pahari miniature paintings, whose poetic imagery, vibrant colours, and meticulous workmanship have an immediate appeal. Although much has been written about them, relatively little attention has been devoted to drawings done by the same painters. The main reason for this neglect is the lack of access to good drawings, a fact that has meant that drawings have generally neither been studied in adequate depth nor properly published, because drawings traditionally remained part of the artist's stock and were not delivered to the patrons of their paintings. About half of the Pahari states became centres of painting from the 17th to 19th century, but drawings are known mainly from Guler, Jammu, Kangra and Chamba, and secondly from Basohli, Mankot and Bandralta. This catalogue showcases examples from these schools, the best drawings by the Guleri artist brothers Manaku and Nainsukh, as well as by their sons and grandsons, who were active at Guler, Jammu, Basohli and Chamba from about 1730 until 1825. Of great significance for study is the museum's unparalleled collection of Chamba drawings, most of them being published here for the first time. This publication, the inaugural volume in the series of catalogues of the Museum's drawings, is the first serious study of Pahari drawings in fact, of any school of Indian drawings. It showcases some of the finest drawings by Pahari painters and discusses in depth all aspects of their production, themes and historical details. (jacket).

Hardcover. Condition: New. First. 345pp. With color illustrations. his beautifully written and profusely illustrated catalogue of Pahari paintings in the Jagdish and Kamla Mittal Museum of Indian art in Hyderabad is a major contribution to the study of miniature painting in the Punjab Hills. It Presents in detail many exquisite but hitherto unknown examples of the key centres of painting from the mid 17th to the mid 19th century, and provides sensitive analyses of a number of works of crucial art historical importance. Incorporating the latest research into their discussions of the themes and formal aspects of the 128 works reproduced here, the authors pay special attention to the movement of artists from one state to another within the Pahari region, and formulate ground-breaking accounts of the early phases of painting at courts such as Chamba, Mandi, and Kullu. Particularly noteworthy are their strikingly original insights into the family workshop of Pandit Seu and his highly talented sons, Manaku and Nainsukh, whose paintings and legacy into the next two generations are exceptionally well represented in the collection. They devote unprecedented attention processes, and frequently arrive at fresh and convincing distinction among the paintings produced by various members of a given family workshop. The superb quality of the illustrations, the selection of choice details, and the inclusion of revealing comparative material make this book essential to anyone who studies or enjoys Pahari painting.

Hardcover. Condition: New. This Meticulously researched, beautifully written, and sumptuously illustrated catalogue of Deccani paintings, drawings, and manuscripts in the Jagdish and Kamlal Mittal Museum of Indian Art in Hyderabad is certain to become a landmark in the study of Indian miniature painting. By far the most comprehensive publication on painting in the Deccan, a region that spans south-central India, it provides sensitive analyses of 104 exquisite paintings, drawings, and manuscripts collected over six decades by Jagdish and Kamla Mittal, a husband-and-wife team of artist-connoisseurs residing in Hyderabad, the pre -eminent cultural centre of the Deccan, as well as 49 comparative works from other collection. Alongside new insights into important paintings from the courts of Ahmadnagar, Bijapur and Golkonda in the 16th and 17th centuries are discoveries from the later courts at Aurangabad and Hyderabad, including several newly identified major artists. Paintings from such places as Berar, Ellichpur, Nagpur, and Nossam are discussed in depth for the first time, as are works produced at the little-known tributary states once loosely allied with the Nizam of Hyderabad. The superb quality of the illustrations, the selection of choice details , and the inclusion of revealing comparative material make this highly informative book essential to anyone who studies or enjoys Indian miniature painting.
