In fairly good navy cloth boards, gilt logo for Golden Treasury Series to front, gilt titles to back strip. The covers are wobbly at front from hinge damage, quite straight and clean; corners and spine ends bumped and frayed. Slightly tanned free end papers, name and date to front one; lightly foxed paste downs. Very tanned cut edges; the fore edge is deckled. Good text block overall. Loose Prelims block, with webbing visible from some of these pages. The remaining pages are firm and quite clean, not tanned, apart from tissue guard to title page. Fairly heavy pencil annotations up to page 152 (end of Book IV.

Her younger sister was the psychologist Karin Stephen,who married Adrian Stephen, Virginia Woolf's younger brother She married Oliver Strachey,the elder brother of the biographer Lytton Strachey of the Bloomsbury group. He worked as a cryptographer at Bletchley in WW2. Ownership signature of Mary Berenson and her husband on the half title page, "M. W. [and] B. F. C. Costelloe, 40 Grovenor Road." Slight lean and slight wear, otherwise very good.
