Hardcover. Condition: Very Good +. Early Edition. BROWN'S SELF INERPRETING BIBLE, circa 1850s. Also Contains The Apocrypha. This is a very heavy, very large copy, weighing over 23 lbs. Hardcover. Bound in full burgundy leather, likely sheepskin. Covers are beautifully decorated with a gilt tooled border. In the center of the front cover, a metal bookplate (likely silver or steel) is affixed with previous owner's names engraved, Thomas and Fanny McLean, dated 1858. Please see further notation of provenance below. All four corners are protected by the same metal coverings, engraved in a flourish decoration. Two additional ornamented metal closure attachments are present on the cover, yet the attachments from the back cover are missing. Hubbed spine bears four raised bands ornamented in gilt decoration, and the title "Brown's Bible" is also lettered in gilt. All edges gilt. Inside covers are bordered in a gilt tooled decoration at the edge. Endpapers are marbled in burgundy, blue, orange, off white and black. Embellished throughout with numerous highly finished, full plate, steel engravings from paintings by the most eminent artists in black and white. Frontispiece is a lovely engraving of "Melanchthon, Luther, Pomeranus and Cruciger Translating the Bible in the Year 1532", engraved by J. C. Buttre, and protected by a tissue paper covering. Also contains second, engraved title page with the illustration title, "The Opening of the Law". Dual columned with extensive footnotes and annotation at the bottom of pages. Text is a larger print, with smaller footnote text. In addition to the Old and New Testaments and The Apocrypha, this edition contains: A section "To the Reader"; A Table of Offices and Conditions of Men; An Introduction to the Right Understanding of the Oracles of God; A Chronological Index of Scripture History; An Appendix of Weights, Measures, Moneys, and Times, Mention in Scripture; and Chronological Tables. xvii, 744 pp., 745-1030 pp., 122 pp. EXCERPT FROM "TO THE READER": Not to depreciate the valuable commentaries of Poole, Patrick, Clark, Henry, Burkitt, Gill, Doddridge, Guyse, &c., but to exhibit their principal substance with all possible advantage, in a manner that might best comport with the ability and leisure of all classics of the community; and especially to render the oracles of God their own interpreter, and enable every serious reader to judge for himself what doctrines ought to be believed and what duties practiced by the Christian, are the avowed aims of this publication. In the copious Introduction, the Principal Proofs of the Divine Authority of the Old and New Testaments, and the Rules necessary to promote the profitable perusal of the oracles of God therein contained, are largely exhibited. An accurate attention thereto will, through the blessing of God, greatly assist in searching the Scriptures with success. The Contents of the sacred books, and their respective chapters, are an accurate, full, and explicatory, representation of their subject. Properly attending to these, the reader must discern of whom, or of what, the Holy Ghost there speaks, and understand the passage accordingly. he may easily fix in his mind a general, but distinct view of the whole system of inspiration; and thus be capable, with the utmost readiness, to find out or compare whatever passages of Scripture he may desire. Explanatory Notes are chiefly confined to the figurative, the prophetic, and the practical parts. here the obscurity of Scripture, or the importance of faith and holiness, chiefly required them. [.] Thus we may listen to and converse with God, and lay our consciences open to the inspired arrows of our all-conquering Redeemer; we find his words, and eat them, to the joy and health of our soul; we hide them in our heart, that we may not sin against him; we become mighty in the Scriptures, and expert in handling this sword of the Spirit, in opposition to every enemy of our soul; in fine, we are made wise unto salvation; are reproved, corrected, and instructed in righteousness, and perfectly furnished for every good work. May the Lord himself prosper it for these ends! PROVENANCE: Research by Shelley and Son Books indicates that this Bible was very likely owned by the Thomas Alexander McLean (born in Ontario in 1824, died 1896), buried in Union Cemetery, Calgary, Calgary Census Division, Alberta, Canada; and Fanny McClean (born in Quebec in 1835, date of death unknown). Thomas Alexander McLean's father was Chief Justice The Hon. Archibald McLean (1791 to 1865), a lawyer, judge and political figure in Upper Canada, and the grandson of Lieutenant Colonel The Hon. Neil McLean and his wife, Isabella McDonell of Leek. Quite a bit more can be read about the fascinating life of Thomas Alexander McLean's Father, Chief Justice Archibald McLean (judge) on Wikipedia. The possible significance of the 1858 date engraved on the cover plate, may indicate that this Bible could have been a gift to the family, marking the birth of their second daughter, Fanny, (who was born that same year, 1858), although no other indication or notation of this confirmation is present. Per an article notation (on find a grave dot com) from the Calgary Daily Herald, Thursday, April 3, 1913, notes that "this second daughter Fanny passed away on March 31, [1913], at the residence of her brother-in-law, H. McClure Williams; second daughter of the late T. A. McLean, and granddaughter of the late Honorable Archibald McClean, chief justice of Upper Canada." Other children of Thomas and Fanny McLean are: Elizabeth Joan (McLean) Ferguson, Archibald Duncan McLean, Mary McPherson McLean, Joan Cameron (McLean Smith and Katherine Maude McLean. CONDITION: Shows general shelf wear and rubbing, and the metal fixtures have lightly tarnished. Binding is quite solid and sound, and boards are firmly attached. Leaves have beautifully and evenly toned. There is some foxing, but it is primarily within the endpapers and engravings. Engravings are quite bold and beautiful, and fox.
