Large 8°, original blue printed wrappers. In very good condition. Author's ink presentation inscription to the Viscondessa de Espinhal on initial blank leaf recto. Small white paper ticket with red border and serrated edges, presumed shelf location at center, tipped on to upper outer corner of rear wrapper. (1 blank l.), 15 pp, (1 blank l.). *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION.Manuel dos Santos Pereira Jardim (Coimbra, 1818-Coimbra, 1887), University Professor and politician, was from a liberal family persecuted by D. Miguel. as a young student fought with the forces of D. Pedro during the siege of Porto between July 1832 and August 1833. He earned a doctorate in Philosophy from Coimbra University in 1840, where he began teaching, eventually holding a number of important posts. From 1846 to 1853 he became active in politics on the left liberal side. Active in the Santa Casa da Misericorda de Coimbra, promoting primary education, he also served as the city's mayor. He published a great many books, pamphlets, and articles. The title was granted by D. Luís, 28 December 1871.Provenance: Maria da Piedade de Melo Sampaio Salazar, 1.ª Viscondessa de Espinhal (1796-1882).The title was granted to her as a widow by D. Luís, 24 July 1868.
