Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Published 1939/1940.This is a Very Good Set of 6 Divisions, originally published in 7 divisions this set lacks The Fifth Division.Uniform set in blue cloth with gilt titles to the upper covers with further gilt tooled Heraldic Vignettes to the front covers of all volumes.Original yellow endpapers.Volume one has b&w frontispiece of Sir Thomas-Masterman Hardy with engraved Title Page. This scarce work traces Nelson from his infancy to the rank of Commander and then on to his becoming a Rear-Admiral and finally from the hoisting of his flag to his glorious death. The work is published in three volumes and split into seven divisions. There are many wonderful engraved portraits of eminent figures such as rear Admiral Richard Kempenfelt and Frederick The Third,Lord Collingwood,Admiral Alan Gardner,Admiral Rodney Baron plus Battle Scene of Victory off Ushant.Division Six still has present a large folding map of Boulogne Harbour and it's fortifications. This is generally a very clean and tidy set with a little spotting present to the margins of the plates.text remians clean.Binding are firm with just a little weakness to Division Four towards centre section join.No previous inscriptions are present.Nelson went against the conventional tactics of the time by cutting through the enemy's lines. Nelson was noted for his ability to inspire and bring out the best in his men, to the point that it gained a name: "The Nelson Touch". His actions during these wars and his heroic image as a one-armed, one-eyed patriot, ensured that before and after his death he was revered. In 1798, even though he had been married since 1787, Nelson famously became embroiled in an affair with Emma, Lady Hamilton, the wife of William Hamilton, the British Ambassador to Naples which lasted until his death. Emma became Nelson's mistress, returning to the United Kingdom to live openly with him, and eventually they had a daughter, Horatia. It was the public knowledge of this affair that induced the Royal Navy to send Nelson back out to sea after he had been recalled.By the time of his death in 1805 Nelson had become a national hero, and he was given a State funeral. His memory lives on in numerous monuments, the most notable of which is London's Nelson's Column, which stands in the centre of Trafalgar Square.Scarce set Lacking Division Fine.Six Divisions Only 1839/1840.

Leberecht Staggemeier (1759-1827) was one of the great German-born binders of the period, several of whom came to London in order to fulfill the demand for fine bindings for the great country libraries. This massive work was the first "official" biography of Nelson.
