Book First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 220 pages. Published in 2012. Retrospective collection of portrait-photographs. One of the most beautiful photography books of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by Hatje Cantz: Oversize-volume format. White cloth boards with red titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Steve Schapiro. Text by Mathias Harder. The subjects are THE Who's Who of 20th century performing and visual arts. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Germany to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ, which features, in a photographic coup, David Bowie on the cover, and red gilt titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Steve Schapiro's "Then And Now". A triumphant achievement. "The photographer behind countless now-classic portraits of rock stars, film stars, and politicians from the 1960's and 1970's, Schapiro has worked as a film set photographer on more than 200 Hollywood movies; designed several iconic film posters, notably 'Midnight Cowboy', 'Taxi Driver', and 'The Godfather'; and as documentary photographer, recorded the political tumult of the 1960's and 1970's, in photo-essays on drug addiction, the Civil Rights Movement, and Presidential campaigns. Looks back at Schapiro's half-century career, reproducing famous images alongside new and unseen work. Includes portraits of the stars as never-before-seen" (Publisher's blurb). They include indelible portraits of iconic figures such as: Woody Allen, David Bowie, Marlon Brando, Johnny Depp, Robert De Niro, Francis Ford Coppola, Jodie Foster, Aretha Franklin, Dustin Hoffmann, John Huston, Michael Jackson, Sophia Loren, Rene Magritte, Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Jack Nicholson, (the very elusive) Roman Polanski, Otto Preminger, Robert Rauschenberg, Robert Redford, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Andy Warhol, Orson Welles, and Frank Zappa, among others. Genuine celebrity is not just captured, it is certified for posterity, by Schapiro's camera. An absolute "must-have" title for Steve Schapiro collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and inscribed in red pen-marker on the title page by the photographer: "A great friend with a great eye. Stay inspired! Best, Steve". It is followed by his signature at the bottom of the page: "Steve Schapiro". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The red pen beautifully matches the book's red titles. The recipient, Paul Berlanga, who is named, is a Chicago-based photography expert and important artist-painter. This title is a late-modern photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and inscribed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: ALL other signed copies available online are also from us. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white plates. One of the finest American photographers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER STEVE SCHAPIRO TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 3775734260. Signed by Author.

Condition: Good. Poster. Printed on unused pressure sensitive paper. 28 x 25 inches. ."The Man Behind the Moo":But this cow wasn't always the Ben & Jerry's cow. In the earliest days, the duo had a goofy cartoon cow that they used on their trucks and in advertisements, but they never thought it was quite right. So, in 1983, they approached Woody Jackson. Opens a new window, a beloved Vermont artist known for his stunning cow depictions to talk about a partnership. Always fond of supporting fellow Vermonters, Ben and Jerry were excited to work with Woody and upgrade their cow art to boot. The guys struck a deal, and this cow has been the face of Ben & Jerry's ever since."Woody Jackson, often know as the ?Cowman? began painting my iconic Vermont Holsteins in 1972, after graduating from Middlebury College, where I found my calling in art and then in the love of Vermont and its landscape. My friends and I worked as hired hands for the local dairymen. I worked for Avery Carl and his son Waverly in Bridport, VT. Their farm sat on a small hill overlooking the wide expanse of the Champlain Valley with the magnificent Adirondack Mountains to the West. There were barns and silos on most rises among the colorful fields of corn, hay and alfalfa spread in front of me, as I raked hay back and forth on meadow. The cows were always in the scene, stealing it, their black and white abstractions in contrast to the saturated hues of green, gold and fiery red sunsets. Blurring ones eyes lightly, there was only the black and white patterns against all those charged colors.".
