Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Poor. 1st Edition. 1st edition, 1948. (No date is given, but the Preface is dated November, 1948, so the book is sold and described here as a 1st edition). Unusual and strikingly illustrated book (illustrated by Eric Byrd). Collection of Zulu songs broadcast from the Durban studios of the South African Broadcasting Company, 1943-1948. Published to "herald the beginning of a series of authoritative works on the artistic side of African life". A highly interesting book which needs to be contextualised within the 1940s in South Africa. 121 pages printed and bound on blue boards. Boards are marked externally as shown in the accompanying photographs. There are also marks internally to the end pages and the book is thus priced accordingly. The song contents are divided into sections as follows: 'Historical Incidents'; 'Country Affairs'; 'Songs of Praise to The Chief'; 'Faction Fighting Songs'; 'Old Men, Young Men, Women and Children'; 'Country Dancing Songs'; 'Love Songs'; 'Hymns of the Church of Nazareth'; 'Police and Passes'; 'Songs for "Mbube" Strutting Dances'; 'Town Dancing Songs' and 'Concert Platform Songs'. Black and white illustrations by Byrd, a South African artist born in Durban in 1905 who studied art in Cardiff, Wales before returning to S. Africa and then moving to Canada (died 1983 or 1985). The illustrated dust-jacket is in frail, poor condition and protected in a clear wrapper - extensive wear & tear, fox-marks and pieces missing as in the accompanying photos. An unusual book. 8vo. (Additional postage will be requested for international destinations).
