Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Illustrations in color by Allen True (illustrator). 1st Edition. Signed "Clarence E. Mulford" in black ink to the half-title page. (This is a "live" signature -- the author had trouble with his pen to the "l" and "d" of his surname, where the pen dug a little deeper.) Mulford's second published book. (The 1920 silent film starred William Farnum and Louise Lovely (Nellie Louise Carbasse, 1895-1980, credited as the first Australian actress to have a successful career in Hollywood, from 1914.) Lavender ribbed cloth with gilt title still bright to front board, though gilt to spine titles largely faded, reducing them mostly to blind-stampings. Color paste-on vignette to front board still lovely. Bonhams & Butterfield auction ticket laid in. Full-color frontispiece and three additional internal Allen True illustrations still protected by original tissue guards. Mulford of course introduced the world to Hopalong Cassidy (title character of his third book, 1910), though this a non-Hopalong, stand-alone Western. 399 pp. followed by an ad for the author's first book, "Bar-20" (1906), an Arizona Ranch whose riders include "one Hopalong Cassidy, whose peaceful intentions somehow or other were always getting him into trouble." Reduced from $400. Signed by Author(s).
