Soft cover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. Hicks-Jenkins, Clive cover (illustrator). Limited Edition. We can safely assert that our first Bibliography (The Old Stile Press . . . in the twentieth century) was very well received when it was published ten years ago and is still highly regarded. Its aim to be entertaining and fun, as well as to contain all the information a librarian or bibliophile would need, was enthusiastically welcomed and it will not be surprising that, for this new volume, the same principles apply. . This time, however, the whole book (as well as Clive Hicks-Jenkins fabulous cover painting!) is printed in full colour. Each of our books that has appeared since the last Bibliography was completed in 1999 here has two double page spreads with its bibliographical details and images photographed and printed in colour so that the bindings are shown as well as the interiors. Nicolas writes about each, with anecdotes and dramas of their production or of how they came into being. He also contributes a short look into the future of books which may become! Frances writes about what happens to all these books once they arrive in the house from the binders - finding and keeping customers, providing them with information and generally delivering the goods . Nancy Campbell has written an Introductory essay on the work of these ten years, with a great appreciation of the ethos in which the books come into being, the commitment of the artists and writers (where the text is contemporary) with whom the Press has worked, and then the books themselves.

Hardcover. Condition: New. Hicks-Jenkins, Clive (illustrator). Limited Edition. In 2001, Newport Museum and Art Gallery housed a major exhibition of the paintings and drawings of Clive Hicks-Jenkins. Though partly retrospective, the main part of the exhibition was a sequence of work entitled The Mare's Tale. This centred on the mumming figure of the Mari Lwyd used symbolically and especially to explore the artist's journey toward acceptance of his father's death. Poems by Catriona Urquhart, which were inspired by these works, were exhibited beside them. The book, here published by The Old Stile Press, presents these poems and, in turn, has images by Clive Hicks-Jenkins specially prepared for the purpose.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: New. Hicks-Jenkins, Clive (illustrator). Limited Edition. With an essay by Dr. Peter Wakelin: The enigmatic shepherd: the sweet and bitter love of Richard Barnfield (1574-1627) When The Affectionate Shepheard was first published, in London in 1594, its author was 20 years of age and immediately became a celebrity -- although he ceased to write six years later. In the centuries since, however, both poem and poet have largely disappeared from sight. Printings have been few and this one is thought to be the very first to be accompanied by images. The poem followed the rich tradition of pastoral poetry and was influenced especially by the second Eclogue of Vergil, taking unrequited love as its theme and, as its subject, the love of a shepherd, Daphnis, for the young man, Corydon. An essay, putting the work fascinatingly in its historical and literary context, has been specially written by Dr. Peter Wakelin for inclusion in this edition. If the poem is an unusual and worthwhile rediscovery, so is the printmaking technique employed by Clive Hicks-Jenkins. Involving glass and a layer of pigment, it is more akin to line engraving on, say, metal than to any form of drawing. This publication is also remarkable for being the first of our books to be printed entirely on paper handmade by Frances McDowall at The Old Stile Press.

One of 330 copies of which 40 are reserved; bound in quarter cloth with paper covered boards from a cloth design named 'Diagonal'. Muriel Rose developed a friendship with the whole Bawden family. Edward's letters to her, dating back to the 1930s, give us a very good view of his wartime work, of her Little Gallery, and in particular, their shared love of cats. Gill Clarke's introduction and notes set the letters in context. Ilustrated throughout in colour.

This set of twenty powerful sonnets was published in 1595, a year later than The Affectionate Shepheard. We have again tried to make up, in some measure, for centuries of disregard and obscurity by offering them in a rich and pleasing way - with a generous format, lavishly substantial paper, an intriguing binding . . . to say nothing of a wonderful set of images by the artist. Book
Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. Hicks-Jenkins, Clive (illustrator). Limited Edition. Equus was first produced on stage in 1973 and in its first published form Peter Shaffer wrote of the dangers of flatly setting down on paper what was far from flat on the stage, and listing inexpressively details of the work which, in accumulation, became deeply expressive . John Dexter directed that first production powerfully through suggestion , . . . he charges the action of the play with electric life. He is a master of gesture and economy. More than thirty years later those words could be written about Clive Hicks-Jenkins imagery which now accompanies the text. He wanted to create his own universe for this new expression of Shaffer s story. Meditations and inventions, rather than recollections of past productions were his aim. This is a long, dramatic text of a dreadful event committed by a highly disturbed young man. The characters endeavour to explore the mental world in which such a deed could be comprehensible but the power of the play is in the extraordinary relationship of the young man and his psychiatrist. Understanding the overwhelming nature of Alan s love of horses becomes the key and the imagery focuses on the struggle between horse and man and emergent sexuality.

A severely limited production of only 25 copies, of which "one [is reserved] for The Old Stile Press, one for each of the contributors and the remaining copies available for purchase". "Be Still .the response of friends," is an artistic response to a miniature book written by Nicolas McDowall and published in 2000, "Be Still, twelve haiku from the valley of the Wye." A friend of the McDowalls, Bill Garnett (Director/Curator, Pomegranate Fine Art) was especially fond of that book and felt it demanded to be re-visited with illustration. Garnett charged the McDowalls with the retro-realization, and the plan was quickly developed. The twelve haiku "months" were chosen by the respective artists with a maximum image dimension decided upon. Upon completion the blocks were presented to the McDowalls for printing, the result being this work, done to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the press; of the 25 copies printed, one was reserved for each contributor and one for the Press, leaving very few available to be sold. ___DESCRIPTION: Blue paper portfolio houses 14 loose folded leaves, within 13 of those leaves is a signed and numbered print (one by Harry Brockway entitled "Be Still", the other twelve for each of the twelve months), with the 14th print inlaid to the recessed upper board (also signed and numbered); text printed in black and blue, the paper for the text is Somerset Book White 175 gsm, the images are all printed on Rives Blanc Natural 120 gsm, folio size (approximately 13.25" by 10"), unpaginated, 14 folded leaves and 14 relief prints, each print is signed and numbered by the respective artist, signed at the colophon by Nicolas and Francis McDowell; limited edition of 25, this number 11.
