Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: very good. 249 pages. Illustrations. Notes and opinions. Sources. Bibliography. Index. Small tear at front DJ flap. Signed with date by the author on the title page. Carole Herrick was chair of the Fairfax History Commission. She is a past president of the McLean Historical Society. Herrick co-chaired McLean & Great Falls Celebrate Virginia, 1607-2007, and served on the board of Fairfax 2007, two organizations that promoted the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown. She chaired the "McLean Centennial Celebration" in 2010, "McLean Remembers the Civil War" in 2011 and "An Afternoon with the Madisons" In 2014. Herrick has authored seven books: "Ambitious Failure: The Story of Chain Bridge the First Bridge Across the Potomac River;" "August 24, 1814: Washington in Flames;" "Yesterday-100 Recollections of McLean and Great Falls, Virginia;" "Yesterday-Additional Recollections of McLean and Great Falls, Virginia;" " Images of America, McLean;" "Legendary Locals of McLean, Virginia;" and "A Chronological History of McLean; Virginia." The author revises or clarifies much of the mythology surrounding these events, particularly the tale of Dolley Madison's flight from the White House with Gilbert Stuart's portrait of George Washington. August 24, 1814 describes the British invasion to the City of Washington. Chapters are devoted to the British advance up the Patuxent River in search of Commodore Barney's flotilla, the defeat of American militia forces at Bladensburg, the flights of President James and Dolley Madison, the burning of America's seat of government, the surrender of the City of Alexandria, and the writing of the "Star Spangled Banner." The destruction by the British of the capital city was a very small part in the War of 1812, but nothing in American history parallels this disastrous event. The the invasion and burning of Washington City, and the subsequent sacking of the City of Alexandria, should have never happened. They were definitely preventable. That is the overall theme of the book. The torching of Washington City, rallied the people, and combined with the American victory at Baltimore three weeks later, a wave of patriotism was unleashed that began a much needed unification of the fledging nation.
