Book
Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Rodriguez, Andres (illustrator). 368 Pages Indexed. This is the 2007 - 2008 official manual of New Mexico state government. It is a biennial handbook of information on the state and its government, past and present. It is a resource for students, researchers, news media, and just about anyone who seeks information about New Mexico. The first New Mexico Blue Book was published in 1882 by the Secretary of the Territory. Contents have not varied much over the years and it still includes a register of elected officials. Beginning in 1913 with statehood, the New Mexico Blue Book began publication in its current format under the responsibility of the Secretary of State. Over the years the Blue Book was a political instrument since it listed all of the elected officials. From the day this 2007 - 2008 edition was released it came under fire for its free distribution and its $70,000 cost. There was also criticism for its three full page portraits of elected officials with brag pages touting their accomplishment. There are three pages that include the secretary's family photographs including Mary Herrera's wedding. The 2009 - 2010 edition released in December also brought criticism prompting Dick Knifing, local news commentator, to call it The Mary Herrera Yearbook. Largely because of these criticisms in 2012 Dianna Duran, the first Republican elected to the Secretary of State office since 1928, reduced the print run to 1000 copies at a cost of $11,000. Much of the contents, some 367 pages, were about the previous 100 years of New Mexico history and for the first time the Blue Book was no longer free and could be ordered for $10.95. Contents of this Blue Book 2007 - 2008 Edition are as follows: Introduction, Geology, History of New Mexico, Native American Section, State Symbols, Voter Section, Federal Section, Executive Section, Legislative Section, Judicial Section, County Section, Economic Section, Education Section, Attraction Section, and Resource Section. On page v this book is labeled a first edition. It is illustrated throughout with drawings, maps, charts, and photographs.

Many of these ceremonies are open to the public and this is the best single reference for visitors to dances at the Rio Grande Pueblos, Zuni Pueblo, the Hopi Mesas, and the Navajo and Apache reservations. Fergusson's classic guide to New Mexico and Arizona Indian ceremonies is once again available in print. It offers background information on the history and religion of the area's Native American peoples and describes the principal public ceremonies and some lesser-known dances that are rarely performed. Here is information on the major Pueblo rituals -- the Corn Dance, Deer Dance, and Eagle Dance -- as well as various dances at Zuni, including the complicated Shalako. Fergusson also describes the Hopi bean-planting and Niman Kachina ceremonies in addition to the Snake Dance, the Navajo Mountain Chant and Night Chant, and several Apache ceremonies." ; edge wear to spine ; small creases to front ep and flyleaf ; else VG. Condition: New.
