First Edition, 1/650. [ii]-xx+[1]-20pp. Quarto [28 cm] 1/4 teal cloth over teal boards with a paper label on the backstrip. In blank teal dust jacket. Near fine/Near fine. Decorative header art by William F. Rauschnabel. This work was printed in a limitation of 650 unnumbered copies. John Henry Nash (1871-1947) was a renowned fine printer who spent the majority of his career in the San Francisco area, founding the Twentieth Century Press with Bruce Brough, which was renamed Tomoye Press when Paul Elder was made a partner. Later Nash founded his own eponymous printing venture, this is where he cemented legacy as one of the great American printers. Later in his life he would teach printing and typography at the University of Oregon.
Published by John Lane - The Bodley Head Ltd., London, 1929
First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Thus. London: John Lane - The Bodley Head Ltd., 1929. First thus. The book begins as the story of a handsome footman who resists the come-ons of a wealthy woman - intended to parody a popular eighteenth century novel about hand-maid in the same fix - and then takes on a life of its own, describing the further adventures of this footman and the persons he meets along the way. The twelve full-page Tealby illustrations (plus additional ones within the text) are quite expressive of the humor of the book. Black cloth printed in gilt, pictorial endpapers, 350 pages. Some light external wear, mainly a bit of fraying to the spine ends, good hinges, very clean pages. Five of the plates have dampstains at the far top inner margins, with only one having the stain actually touch the printed image (the stains must have occurred prior to binding, as none of the text pages have similar stains). Very clean pages, with no foxing other than a light scattering on the first blank and half-title. Name on first blank. A sound, clean and handsome copy. First Thus. Hard Cover. Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
