Henry was the first secretary and director of the Smithsonian Institute, and an original member of the National Academy of Sciences (and its president 1868-1878). 1-inch closed tears at inner ends of tissue facing portrait; personal bookplate of noted American chemist Charles F. Roth, whose copy this was. Else a tight, solid, clean copy with no internal markings. Scarce, with a nice association bookplate.
